Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) and Billy Bryk are set to write a remake of the 1999 horror comedy film Idle Hands for Sony Pictures, and Jason Reitman is set to produce.

Wolfhard and Bryk might also end up directing the movie following the sale of their film festival hit Hell of a Summer, which they co-wrote, co-directed, co-starred in and produced.

Reitman previously worked with Wolfhard and Bryk on the two Ghostbusters movies and on the recently released Saturday Night. Gil Keenan also will produce.

The original film follows the story of Anton Tobias, a lazy, stoner teenager whose right hand becomes possessed and goes on a murderous rampage.

Anton is desperate to stop his hand is killing people on its own, starting with his parents and best friends, He tries to contain the hand’s violent impulses, but things spiral further out of control when his hand becomes entirely detached and takes on a life of its own.

With the help of his reanimated friends and his love interest, Molly, Anton attempts to end the carnage. The movie blends slapstick comedy, gore, and campy horror, creating a cult classic known for its irreverent tone and tongue-in-cheek approach to the “possessed hand” trope.

I imagine the remake will tell the same story in a different, more contemporary way. It seems like a project that the creative team will have some fun with.
