My Chemical Romance Playing ‘Black Parade’ In Full Next Year

Emo diehards, rejoice. My Chemical Romance will perform their beloved 2006 genre classic The Black Parade in its entirety on a 10-date North American stadium tour next summer, following a one-off front-to-back airing of the album at the recent When We Were Young festival in Las Vegas.

Dates begin July 11 in Seattle and run through Sept. 13 in Tampa, Fla. Each show will have a different opening act, including Violent Femmes, 100 gecs, Wallows, Garbage, Alice Cooper, Pixies, Devo, IDLES and Evanescence. For Gerard Way and company’s home state show in New Jersey on Aug. 9, both Death Cab for Cutie and Thursday will support. Tickets go on sale Friday (Nov. 15).

Reviewing the album for SPIN in 2006, Andy Greenwald wrote, “The Black Parade is a dark concept album about an unnamed ‘Patient’ who seems to die on the country-ish first track (‘The End.’), only to awaken in a Technicolor, rockabilly Busby Berkeley musical (the outrageously peppy and profane ‘Dead!’). On the album’s multipart centerpiece and first single, ‘Welcome to the Black Parade,’ Way is still gleefully fetishizing death and vampires, but traveling the world and getting sober have given him a new sense of mission — and hope. Amid trademark screamers ‘This Is How I Disappear’ and ‘House of Wolves,’ positive refrains like ‘I am not afraid to keep on living’ emerge. Way truly sees himself as the ringleader for a generation stuck with their middle fingers up and their heads down. On the glam-hammy ‘Teenagers,’ he seems to morph into an authoritarian military recruiter who smugly drafts kids into ‘the murder machine,’ and then bursts into the giddy chorus: ‘Teenagers scare the living shit out of me!’”
