Well, Joy Reid is the latest public figure to leave Elon Musk’s platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

The MSNBC personality announced on Thursday that she has deleted her X account and explained her reasons for this decision. “Today I finally did something I’ve been meaning to do for a while,” she said in a clip posted on Instagram. “The reason for doing it, and kissing goodbye my 1.9 million followers, is because I haven’t been posting for a long time. I just didn’t want to be contributing content once it was purchased by its present owner.”

She continued, “Every so often I would use it to just look at news that was trending and what’s happening and I would just use it as an aggregator, but I just realized that’s not really worth it. Because in order to do the news aggregation and just look at all, you have to wade through a lot of dreck and just abuse and a lot of negativity and it’s just not worth it.”

Reid’s decision follows a similar move made by former CNN anchor Don Lemon. As previously reported, he announced his exit from the site on Wednesday, citing concerns over the site’s leadership and new policies: “As the Washington Post recently reported on X’s decision to change terms, this ‘ensures that such lawsuits will be heard in courthouses that are a hub for conservatives, which experts say could make it easier for X to shield itself from litigation and punish critics,’” Lemon wrote. “I think that speaks for itself.”

In addition to notable figures, the British newspaper The Guardian also discussed its departure from X, stating, “We wanted to let readers know that we will no longer post on any official Guardian editorial accounts on the social media site X (formerly Twitter). We think that the benefits of being on X are now outweighed by the negatives and that resources could be better used promoting our journalism elsewhere.”

More On Why People Are Leaving and Where They Might Be Heading:

Many have voiced concerns that X promotes far-right content and raised issues regarding owner Elon Musk’s relationship with the president-elect. As a result, some users are flocking to alternative text-based social media platforms like Bluesky and Instagram’s Threads.

It’s only a matter of time before more stars will speak out to announce their exits. Until then, let us know your thoughts in the comment box below!
