Amidst his personal legal troubles, Sean “Diddy” Combs is attempting to save some face by issuing a cease and desist letter to his former protégé, Jamal “Shyne” Barrow. This comes after the latter participated in a documentary detailing the infamous 1999 club shooting involving Diddy and Shyne.

According to Page Six, Diddy’s cease and desist is not to block the film but to “ensure” that the doc contains accurate information. In the film, Shyne alleges that he “took the fall” for Diddy in the case. The outlet stated that ESPN’s Andscape produced the Hulu documentary, but they could not be reached for comment. However, their sources confirmed the letter was sent.

The documentary, “The Honorable Shyne,” chronicles Shyne’s recollection of the night of the shooting and his incarceration. Additionally, the film details his rise from an ex-con to a politician. According to the former rapper, he, Diddy, and his then-girlfriend, Jennifer Lopez, were partying at a Manhattan club in 1999. An altercation between Combs and another man broke out, which led to someone firing shots. Three innocent bystanders were injured as a result.

Shyne and Combs were later arrested and stood trial in 2001. The disgraced music mogul left the courthouse a free man, while Shyne was convicted of assault and reckless endangerment. He served an eight-year sentence and then later became a politician in Belize.

In the doc, the politician stated he believes he was set up to be the fall guy for the incident despite his close friendship with Diddy. Now that more details are being revealed about Combs’ lifetime of crime, Shyne has had time to reflect on his experience with him.

“Because when I said it [at the time], everyone was partying and having a great time with Diddy while I was left to rot in prison,” he stated in the film.

Page Six also states that Shyne believes Diddy arranged for witnesses to testify against him and have him painted as an aggressive and uncontrollable person.

Diddy Denies Shyne’s Claims Of Betrayal

Since Diddy’s alleged crimes have come to light, the Bad Boy founder has remained relatively quiet, allowing his attorneys to speak for him. This case is no different. Representatives for Combs told Page Six he denies Shyne’s claims.

“Mr. Combs categorically denies Mr. Barrow’s allegations, including any suggestion that he orchestrated Mr. Barrow to ‘take the fall’ or ‘sacrificed’ him by directing witnesses to testify against him. These claims are unequivocally false,” his reps stated.

“Mr. Combs was acquitted of all charges related to the [1999 incident] and has consistently maintained his innocence,” they added. “Mr. Combs appreciates the path Mr. Barrow has pursued and wishes him continued success. It is unfortunate that Mr. Barrow has chosen to revisit these allegations.”

The film was released on Nov. 18 to Hulu’s streaming service. The timing of the documentary is uncanny as it comes after Combs was arrested on sex trafficking and racketeering charges in September. His trial is set to begin in May 2025. He is currently awaiting trial at Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center. As BOSSIP has reported, Combs has attempted to receive bail three times. He is currently waiting for a decision for his fourth attempt.
