Cher’s Family Raises Concerns Over Alexander’ AE’ Edwards’ Role In Her Career And Will

Cher Reveals Shocking Discovery About Her Real Name In New Memoir
In her new memoir, “Cher: The Memoir, Part One,” the singer discussed being “shocked” to discover that her birth certificate listed her first name as Cheryl, not the name she thought she had.
“I believed Cherilyn was my name until the day years later when I decided to legally change my name to simply Cher,” she wrote.
The “Moonstruck” star recounted how her mother, Georgia Holt, who was just 19 when she gave birth to Cher in 1946, was too tired after labor to notice the mix-up.
When a nurse asked for the baby’s name, Cher’s mother, unsure, created the name “Cherilyn,” a combination of her favorite actress, Lana Turner’s daughter’s name, who was called Cheryl, and her own mother’s name, Lynda.
However, Cheryl was the name that was registered on the birth certificate.
After learning of the error, Cher confronted her mother, asking, “Do you even know my real name, Mom?” To which Holt responded, “I was only a teenager, and I was in a lot of pain. Give me a break.”
The singer legally changed her name to “Cher” in 1979, dropping not only the “Cheryl” but also the numerous surnames from her father, stepfather, and ex-husbands, Sonny Bono and Gregg Allman.
