Madonna Shows Off Her Dad’s ‘First Selfie’ At 93

Madonna does not shy away from expressing love to her family on social media; her father is the latest recipient of her affection.

The Queen of Pop recently gushed on her Instagram Story about her dad, Silvio Ciccone. The heartwarming tribute marked one of many in their decades-long relationship, with the singer frequently thanking her father for influencing her success.

Although Madonna enjoyed honoring her dad, she did not hold back from criticizing him if necessary. She once noted their relationship was as rocky as it was sweet, labeling Silvio Ciccone the first man to break her heart.

In an Instagram Story update, the “Like a Virgin” hitmaker shared a close-up picture of her father. The snap captured Silvio, presumably at home, posing for the camera in his glasses. “My Dad is so cute… … … His first selfie!” Madonna declared in the overlay text.

However, in her excitement or perhaps hope for another year with her dad, the singer mistakenly labeled him “94 years young!!!” Silvio turned 93 in June, with Madonna marking the occasion with a carousel of images on Instagram.

The first set of images captured her hugging her dad backstage at one of her events. Meanwhile, the other pictures showcased their decades-long bond, including a throwback snap of the pair onstage while the entertainer performed.

“To the O.G Daddy — Happy 93rd Birthday Silvio! Congratulations for riding the roller coaster of life with humor and sanity intact. Thank you for sharing your mantra in life with me, which is: ‘I’m gonna go until the wheels fall off,'” Madonna partly captioned the post.

Madonna echoed similar sentiments about her father’s mantra in 2023, with The Blast reporting that she honored Silvio on Father’s Day. She shared a throwback picture from her dad’s younger days alongside a heartwarming message that read:

“Happy Father’s Day to. All the Dad’s out there!!! She’s, He’s, Them’s, and They’s!! But Most of All to my Father — Silvio — who once told me he was gonna go until the wheels fell off!! S.A. M. E.”

“Thanks for your unrelenting work ethic and Love and for refusing to spoil me in any way. You taught me how to be a Survivor! Forever Grateful. But also really tired…… xxxxxxxx,” Madonna concluded her post.

Madonna has been vocal about her occasionally tense relationship with her father, once calling him the first man to break her heart because he married their family’s nanny, Joan. She described the period of his remarriage as a challenging and emotional time.

According to the singer, her younger self clung to him, hoping he would always be there. However, once he tied the knot, she felt an immense sense of loss and vowed to become self-reliant. Silvio married Joan years after his late wife passed from breast cancer at 30 on December 1, 1963.

PEOPLE shared that Madonna was named after her late mother, Madonna Louise. She and Silvio welcomed the entertainer on August 16, 1958, in Bay City, Michigan. The then-couple also shared five other children: Anthony, Martin, Paula, Christopher, and Melanie.

Madonna’s parents met through her mother’s oldest brother while her father served in the Air Force. She recalled their love story in a 1985 interview, claiming it was an instant connection. “Of course, he met my mother, and he fell in love with her immediately,” she said, adding:

“She was very beautiful. I look like her. I have my father’s eyes, but I have my mother’s smile and a lot of her facial structure.”

Madonna’s parents tied the knot in a Catholic church in Michigan in 1955. Following their union, the couple moved to the suburbs of Detroit, where the singer and her siblings grew up. She recalled the Catholic faith being an integral part of her childhood, noting it inspired many of her songs.

Madonna once noted that her relationship with her dad has been “up and down” over the years, but they always had love. In a 1989 interview, she confessed: “More than anything, I want my father’s approval, whether I want to admit it or not.”

“But he’s always been very affectionate with me,” she added. The Queen Of Pop echoed similar sentiments in her 1990 memoir “Madonna: In Her Own Words,” stressing her deep love for Silvio. In her words:

“I have a million different feelings about my father, but mostly, I love him to death. What’s difficult for my father is the idea that I don’t need him. But I do need him.”
