In the film, Avery and Logan are established as childhood best friends who become romantic partners. However, their relationship ends after Avery, following her mother’s death, decides to leave for London for a dream job. At her farewell party, Logan, unable to stomach the idea of Avery being far away, tries to convince her to stay back. He does so by proposing to her. However, Avery instead accuses him of being unsupportive, which results in them becoming estranged for 10 years.
Avery eventually ends up meeting Cam and starts dating him, while Logan moves on with Cassie. After visiting their respective partners’ house, Avery and Logan cross paths again and realize Cam and Cassie are siblings. The two try their best to hide their past relationship from their new partners and their family. However, Cam and Cassie’s brother Callum finds out about their secret. He then blackmails them into helping him out with stuff, like picking him up from a late-night party.
The truth ultimately gets revealed to the entire family, when Logan’s grandmother recognizes Avery and reveals her and Logan’s past relationship. This also leads to other secrets coming to light such as Erica’s husband and Cam’s father Leonard having an affair with the family friend’s wife. Leonard’s affair shocks everyone but Erica, who knew of it all along.
Avery and Logan eventually rekindle their relationship, after realizing they were always meant for each other. Avery then purchases her old family home where she and Logan start living together. They eventually get engaged and one year later are seen planning their wedding.
