As the investigation into the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson progresses, the NYPD has revealed that the suspect, Mangione, may have targeted Thompson because of his position in a large corporation. However, no evidence allegedly exists that Mangione had personal connections with the insurance company.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny disclosed to NBC News that Magione’s writings suggested a calculated plan to target high-profile executives. He allegedly mentioned attacking the CEO at the “Annual Parasitic Bean-Counter Convention,” which refers to a UnitedHealthcare conference held at the Hilton hotel on the day of the shooting. Mangione allegedly justified his actions in his writings as a way to avoid harming innocent bystanders.

Investigators believe that a back injury sustained in July 2023, which required extensive surgery, may have triggered his actions. Kenny mentioned that Mangione shared X-rays online that showed the screws in his spine. He claimed that the injury changed his life and possibly led him down this path.

We have no indication that he was ever a client of United Healthcare, but he does make mention that it is the fifth largest corporation in America, which would make it the largest healthcare organization in America. So that’s possibly why he targeted that that company,”

On the day of the shooting, Mangione was seen buying a KIND bar and a bottle of water at a Starbucks. Fingerprints found near the crime scene later connected him to these items. After the shooting, Mangione allegedly took a taxi to Washington Heights, then traveled to Philadelphia, and eventually arrived in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Police discovered over $5,000 in cash on him, all in $100 bills, which they believe he withdrew in a single transaction.
