President-elect Donald Trump has nominated former NFL star and one-time Georgia Senate candidate Herschel Walker as “Ambassador to the Bahamas” after previously claiming during his campaign trail that he would put his longtime friend and ally in charge of the “Missile Defense Shield.”

On Tuesday (December 17), Donald Trump took to his account on Truth Social revealing that he was nominating former NFL star Herschel Walker as the “Ambassador to the Bahamas,” which some are claiming is a downgrade from the “Missile Defense Shield” position he claimed he would put him in charge of during his campaign trail.
On Truth Social, Donald Trump wrote, “I am pleased to nominate Herschel Walker as United States Ambassador to the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. Herschel has spent decades serving as an Ambassador to our Nation’s youth, our men and women in the Military, and athletes at home and abroad.”

Trump continued, “A successful businessman, philanthropist, former Heisman Trophy winner, and NFL Great, Herschel has been a tireless advocate for youth sports. During my First Term, he served as Co-Chair of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. Herschel has traveled to over 400 Military installations around the World, removing the stigma surrounding mental health.”
Trump added, “He represented the United States at the 1992 Winter Olympics as a member of the U.S. bobsled team. Congratulations Herschel! You will make Georgia, and our entire Nation, proud because we know you will always put AMERICA FIRST!”

According to Newsweek, Donald Trump nominating Herschel Walker to “Ambassador of the Bahamas” appears to be a big downgrade from the “Missile Defense Shield” position that Trump noted he would put Walker in during a stop on his 2024 presidential campaign.
In April, Donald Trump told a crowd of supporters at a rally in Georgia that he would put Herschel Walker in charge of a new “Missile Defense Shield” if voters re-elected him back into office after winning the 2016 election. At the April Georgia rally, Herschel Walker campaigned for Trump and notably endorsed the wrong Donald. Ending his speech he told rally-goers, “It is time for it to stop, and it stops on Tuesday when we vote for my friend, and your friend, Donald Trump Jr…Donald Trump…Donald J. Trump.”

Despite the mix-up, Donald Trump later came out and mentioned Herschel Walker, claiming he would “put him in charge” of a new “Missile Defense Shield.” Trump told his constituents, “We will build a Missile Defense Shield. All made in the USA; wrapped around our country to defend ourselves and our country. It’s all gonna be made in the United States, a lot of it in your great state. We’ll put Herschel in charge of that little sucker, okay? And we are going to do that…”
Note: Herschel Walker has no experience in missile defense and national security. Additionally, it’s not clear if Trump truly meant Walker would oversee all of the United States’ missile defenses or simply the project of building a new system. Regardless, Walker has still found a position in Trump’s cabinet as “Ambassador to the Bahamas.”
