The teacher and student killed in a Madison, Wisconsin, school shooting earlier this week have been identified.

Fourteen-year-old Rubi Patricia Vergara and 42-year-old Erin West were tragically killed on Monday during a shooting at Abundant Life Christian School. The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office reported that the victims died from homicidal firearm-related trauma. Their deaths are currently under investigation by authorities and the medical examiner, CBS News reported.
Vergara’s obituary said she was known as an “avid reader who enjoyed art, singing, and playing keyboard in her family worship band.’ Additionally, she was a freshman at the school when she was killed. She leaves behind her parents, brother, and extended family. It was unclear what West’s exact position was at the school.

Police suspect that the shooter, 15-year-old Natalie Rupnow, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The shooting was reported before 11 a.m. during study hall at the private K-12 Christian school. Investigators are looking into her social media activity. Sophomore Mackynzie Wilson explained to CNN that Rupnow was quiet and didn’t have a lot of friends.
“She was really quiet. She didn’t really have any friends and she just seemed really lonely. It wasn’t like she was trying to fit in. She seemed very content being alone.”
In addition to the victims who lost their lives, six other individuals were injured during the shooting.
