A devastating incident took place at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, where a car crashed into a crowd on Friday evening, resulting in two fatalities and 68 injuries.

The vehicle’s driver was quickly apprehended by the police, who were investigating the crash as an intentional act. According to the Associated Press, the driver has been identified as a 50-year-old Saudi doctor in Germany since 2006. The motives behind the suspect’s actions are currently under investigation. Fifteen individuals suffered severe injuries from the crash, while 37 others sustained medium-severity injuries. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. local time, a peak hour for the Christmas market filled with visitors engaged in holiday shopping.
Saxony-Anhalt Governor Reiner Haseloff expressed his deep sorrow over the incident. “This is a terrible event, particularly in the days leading up to Christmas,” he stated as he headed to the affected area to oversee the response efforts. Madgeburg’s University Hospital reported treating 10 to 20 patients from the incident and was highly alert for more.
