When you think of National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Mae Questel likely isn’t the first name that comes to mind. But the actress behind Aunt Bethany was far more than just the lovable, quirky relative who wrapped up her cat as a gift.

Questel’s impact on pop culture extends far beyond live-action comedy as her voice is also tied to some of the most iconic animated characters in history.

Mae Questel was the voice of Betty Boop! Go ahead and revisit Christmas Vacation and listen closely when Aunt Bethany speaks. Once you know, it’s impossible to unhear as her whimsical, high-pitched voice is unmistakable.

The same vocal charm that brought Betty Boop to life in the 1930s still resonates in Aunt Bethany’s lines decades later.

Questel began her career as an impressionist, showcasing vocal talent that would eventually lead her to create some of the most recognizable voices in animation. Her portrayal of Betty Boop, inspired by a mix of baby talk and jazz-age flapper sass was a huge deal for her

But Betty wasn’t the only iconic character she voiced. Mae also lent her vocal talents to Olive Oyl in the Popeye cartoons, giving the lanky character her signature tone. She even voiced Minnie Mouse at one point, making her one of the few performers to embody characters from rival animation studios.

It’s likely you’ve heard Mae Questel’s voice countless times without realizing it. Her work spanned generations, leaving a mark on the Golden Age of animation to modern holiday classics.

When you hear Aunt Bethany ask if the house is on fire or recite the Pledge of Allegiance over Christmas dinner, you might feel a wave of nostalgia.

So, as you watch Christmas Vacationover the holiday, take a moment to appreciate Mae Questel’s contribution to the film and to animation history.

Her performance as Aunt Bethany is a delightful addition to the Griswold family chaos.
