Updated with the latest: A prelude to a lawsuit has bloomed in the weeks following the arrival of It Ends With Us on Netflix. Blake Lively has accused Justin Baldoni, director and star of the film, of sexual harassment and retaliation.
The cinematic adaptation of It Ends With Us arrived in the summer of 2024, and the trailer for the Sony Pictures film, directed by Justin Baldoni and adapted from Colleen Hoover’s best-selling novel, racked up a record number of views in the first 24 hours after it debuted.
Starring Blake Lively, who also executive produces, as protagonist Lily Bloom, the clip, set to Taylor Swift’s “My Tears Ricochet” shows Lily ecstatic to open her flower shop in Boston, with Jenny Slate’s character Alyssa turning on the neon sign. Alyssa is related to Baldoni’s Ryle Kincaid, who stops by the shop and sparks a connection with Lily. Lily has a traumatic past, but reminders of her parents’ relationship surface in Ryle’s behavior as well as her reconnection with ex-boyfriend Atlas Corrigan (Brandon Sklenar).

Hoover’s novel tells the story of Lily Bloom, a girl who has just graduated college and moved to Boston to start a new chapter of her life. When she meets Ryle, a neurosurgeon finishing his residency there, the two gravitate toward each other. Ryle doesn’t want to be distracted by a relationship, but Lily isn’t looking for something casual, so she becomes the exception to Ryle’s rule.

Hoover mentioned on Instagram when she announced the casting of Lily and Ryle that the book was loosely inspired by her mother, who made the decision to get Hoover and her family out of a “scary situation” and brought them to Hoover’s childhood home which she showed in the video. Lily’s past trauma revolves around her parents’ relationship.

Back ahead of the film’s theatrical release in August, it wasn’t difficult to notice that Lively and Baldoni weren’t interacting much during the press cycle to promote It Ends With Us. Deadline interviewed Baldoni about his directorial choices for the film in addition to attending a separate junket to speak with author and executive producer Colleen Hoover as well as stars Lively and Brandon Sklenar.
Lively’s co-star Brandon Sklenar as well as several others close to Lively through the film’s production and otherwise spoke out about rumors that swirled around Lively as the film landed in theaters and far suprassed its modest budget at the box office.
Nearly a week after the film’s release, Baldoni hired crisis PR management as gossip continuted to circulate the relationship between him and Lively.

A few weeks after the film landed on Netflix, Lively filed a 10-claim complaint with the California Civil Rights Department, accusing Baldoni of sexual harassment and retaliation. Baldoni has been dropped by WME, which also reps Lively and her husband Ryan Reynolds, and Baldoni’s Voices of Solidarity Award was rescinded.

The suspenseful novel follows writer Lowen Ashleigh, who gets hired by the husband of a best-selling thriller author Verity Crawford to finish a series of novels that Verity cannot complete because of an accident that left her in a comatose state. Based on manuscripts Lowen finds in Verity’s house, she begins to question if Verity’s writing is purely fiction or not. Deadline exclusively broke the news of Anne Hathaway’s casting in the thriller film, and she will reteam with Michael Showalter after working with him on Amazon’s The Idea of You.
Since the film’s success at the box office, two other Colleen Hoover books have been eyed for adaptation: Regretting You and Reminders of Him. Allison Williams leads the cast of Regretting You. Vanessa Caswill will direct Reminders of Him.
