Amid his high-profile case for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, Luigi Mangione’s courtroom appearance turned heads with his attire during his first courtroom appearance on Monday, December 23.

Mangione wore a burgundy sweater paired with a white-collared shirt, light grey slacks, and orange shoes. Fashion enthusiasts initially believed he was sporting a $1,000 Maison Margiela sweater. However, it was later revealed that he was actually wearing a Merino crewneck sweater from Nordstrom, which retails for $89.50 but is currently on sale for $62.65. Although the specific sweater quickly sold out on the site, it is still available in six other colors, according to the Independent. News of the sweater’s popularity spread rapidly across social media, with users being shocked that the sweater quickly sold out.
Mangione pleaded not guilty to all charges. His attorney, Karen Agnifilo, expressed concerns about the fairness of his trial, criticizing the heavy security and the presence of New York City Mayor Eric Adams at the proceedings. Agnifilo argued that her client was being treated more like “political fodder” than a defendant.

Agnifilo said in a statement last week that the “federal government’s reported decision to pile on top of an already overcharged first-degree murder and state terror case is highly unusual and raises serious constitutional and statutory double jeopardy concerns.” Mangione also faces charges in Pennsylvania related to officials allegedly discovering a 3D-printed gun and fake ID cards found in his possession during the arrest.
He was flown to New York after waiving his extradition on December 19.
