Why ‘Suits LA’ ‘Found’ Cancelled to Make Room for NBC’s NBA Games

Deady City Takes a Mad Max-Esque Turn

2024 brought the cancellation of several fan-favourite TV shows, leaving audiences heartbroken and the television landscape notably changed. From long-running hits to promising newcomers, these cancellations struck a chord with fans and cast members alike. Here’s a closer look at the most disappointing TV show cancellations of the year.

The Good Doctor was a trailblazer in medical dramas, focusing on Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore), a surgeon with autism and savant syndrome. Its thoughtful representation of neurodiversity and compelling cases kept viewers engaged for seven seasons. However, declining viewership and increased production costs led to its cancellation.

Why It Hurt: Fans loved Shaun’s emotional journey, from his struggles in the medical field to his evolving relationships with colleagues and loved ones. The cancellation left unresolved arcs, including Shaun’s transition into fatherhood.

Fan/Cast Reactions: Freddie Highmore shared, “This show was a gift. To everyone who supported us, thank you from the bottom of my heart.” Fans flooded social media with tributes, expressing how Shaun’s story had impacted their lives.

A spin-off of Grey’s Anatomy, Station 19 masterfully combined high-octane firefighting action with heartfelt drama. The show tackled issues like mental health, systemic racism, and LGBTQ+ representation, earning a dedicated following over its seven seasons.

Why It Hurt: The decision to cancel was cited by the network as the show having run its course. Fans were particularly upset as the show had impressive ratings and a lot of fan support. More importantly, with its authentic portrayal of diverse characters, including people of colour, women, and LGBTQ+ individuals, the series had become a beacon of inclusivity in an industry often criticized for its lack thereof. For many, “Station 19” wasn’t just entertainment; it was a source of empowerment and inspiration. Fans believe that so many stories were left untold, further fuelling their determination to see “Station 19” continue. With its powerful message of unity and resilience, the show had become a symbol of hope in turbulent times.

Fan/Cast Reactions:
Fans are fiercely campaigning for a Station 19 revival, uniting under the #SaveStation19 hashtag and launching a series of impressive efforts. These include a Change.org petition that has amassed nearly 92,000 signatures, flying a plane over ABC and Disney Studios with a #SaveStation19 banner, and securing billboards in Hollywood and Times Square. Supporters also ran a USA Today ad campaign for two weekends leading up to the season premiere and organized an LED billboard truck to circle Disney, ABC, and Hulu offices on the day of the finale.

Blue Bloods (CBS)

After 14 seasons, Blue Bloods ended, marking the close of a long-standing CBS staple. The Reagan family’s mix of moral dilemmas and Sunday dinner discussions had become a comfort show for many.

Why It Hurt: The cancellation stemmed from high production costs and the network’s desire to refresh its lineup. For over a decade, fans gathered around their screens to watch the Reagan family balance law enforcement with family loyalty and were devastated by the cancellation.

Fan/Cast Reactions:
Tom Selleck remarked, “The Reagan family has been my home for 14 years. Thank you for inviting us into yours.” Viewers flooded social media with posts reminiscing about their favorite Reagan family moments. Donnie Wahlberg shared that while the cast made every effort to “keep the show alive,” the cast didn’t have the influence needed to sway the network’s decision. He expressed deep sadness over the crew losing their jobs, describing the situation as personally devastating. Wahlberg also reflected on the loss of his bond with everyday New Yorkers and the NYPD, which had become an integral part of his experience on the show.

CSI: Vegas (CBS)

CSI: Vegas aimed to revive the legendary franchise with fresh faces and returning characters. Though it brought back fan favorites like Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox) and Gil Grissom (William Petersen), the series struggled to capture the original’s magic.

Why It Hurt: Fans felt the show still had potential to delve into deeper mysteries, and many were frustrated by the lack of closure for beloved characters.

Fan/Cast Reactions:
Paula Newsome, who played Maxine Roby, shared, “The heart of Vegas lives on in its fans. Thank you for joining us in the lab.”

So Help Me Todd (CBS)

This legal dramedy stood out for its unique dynamic between a meticulous lawyer, Margaret (Marcia Gay Harden), and her free-spirited son, Todd (Skylar Astin). The witty banter and quirky cases brought humour and heart to CBS’s lineup.

Why It Hurt: Despite its charm, the show failed to gain a strong foothold in ratings, leading to its cancellation after two seasons. The show was unique to a network that is flooded with standard police procedurals. Fans felt the show was a breath of fresh air.

Fan/Cast Reactions:
Skylar Astin tweeted, “I’ll always treasure my time as Todd. Thanks to everyone who laughed, cried, and schemed with us!” Fans praised the show for its clever writing and family dynamics.

Walker (The CW)

A modern reimagining of Walker, Texas Ranger, this series focused on Cordell Walker (Jared Padalecki), a widower and father balancing his career as a Texas Ranger with family life.

Why It Hurt: As The CW pivots toward purchasing already produced series to cut down on production costs, Walker was among several cancellations. Fans felt the series had more stories to tell, especially as Cordell’s personal life grew more complex.

Fan/Cast Reactions:
Jared Padalecki said, “It’s been a gift to play Cordell. Thank you to our fans for their endless support.” Fans expressed their frustration, especially since Walker was a top performer for the network.

Dead Boy Detectives (Netflix)

Set in Neil Gaiman’s Sandman universe, this series followed the adventures of two ghostly teens solving supernatural mysteries. The show was praised for its unique tone and imaginative storytelling.

Why It Hurt: Despite critical acclaim, the series struggled to find an audience. Netflix canceled it after one season, leaving fans devastated over its untapped potential.

Fan/Cast Reactions:
Neil Gaiman tweeted, “Heartbreaking to say goodbye to the Dead Boys. Thanks to everyone who believed in them.” Fans started a #SaveDeadBoyDetectives campaign on social media.

Kaos (Netflix)

This highly anticipated series aimed to modernize Greek mythology with a bold, comedic twist. With Jeff Goldblum as Zeus and a star-studded cast, expectations were high.

Why It Hurt: Creative differences and budget concerns led Netflix to cancel the series after one series. Fans were disappointed, having eagerly awaited a fresh take on classic myths.

Fan/Cast Reactions:
Jeff Goldblum said, “It was a joy to work on this ambitious project.” Fans lamented the loss of a show that could have been a game-changer.

Evil (Paramount+)

Evil blended psychological horror, religious debate, and procedural drama, becoming a critical darling over its four seasons. The series explored the battle between science and supernatural forces, with standout performances by Katja Herbers, Mike Colter, and Michael Emerson.

Why It Hurt: Paramount+ cited strategic shifts for the cancellation, but fans were devastated by unresolved plotlines, particularly regarding Leland Townsend’s sinister plans.

Fan/Cast Reactions:
Co-creator Robert King tweeted, “Thank you for embracing the darkness with us. It’s been an extraordinary ride.” Fans demanded closure, with some hoping for a revival or spin-off.

NCIS: Hawai’i (CBS)

This tropical spin-off of the iconic NCIS franchise brought a fresh perspective with Vanessa Lachey leading the charge as Special Agent Jane Tennant. However, CBS decided to cancel the series after three seasons, citing lower-than-expected ratings.

Why It Hurt: The show was praised for its beautiful setting and strong representation of women in leadership roles. Fans particularly loved Tennant’s mix of toughness and vulnerability.

Fan/Cast Reactions: Vanessa Lachey shared, “I’m so proud of what we created with NCIS: Hawai’i. Thank you to our fans for their love and aloha.”

Final Thoughts

The wave of cancellations in 2024 highlights a growing trend in the television industry: networks and streaming platforms are prioritizing profitability over audience loyalty. Rising production costs and declining ratings have forced difficult decisions, but the focus on cutting losses often comes at the expense of fan-favourite shows with dedicated followings. While financial sustainability is crucial, networks must strike a better balance between protecting their bottom line and delivering content that keeps viewers engaged. If they fail to consider audience investment, they risk losing the very viewers who make these shows—and their platforms—successful in the first place.
