It’s been 25 years since Star Wars: The Phantom Menace introduced audiences to young Anakin Skywalker, but for Jake Lloyd, the anniversary came without much celebration.

Now 35, the former child actor has spent the past two decades grappling with mental health challenges, including a diagnosis of schizophrenia and a psychotic break that required extensive treatment.

In March of last year, Lloyd’s mother shared that Jake had completed an 18-month stay at a mental health rehabilitation facility. Recently, Jake spoke with reporter Clayton Sandell, offering an encouraging update on his recovery.

While Jake is still receiving treatment at a new center, he now has more freedom and is cautiously optimistic about his progress.

When asked about the love and support he receives from Star Wars fans, Jake expressed genuine appreciation, describing the connection as “immediately therapeutic.”

He explained: “The experience I’ve had with the fans is immediately therapeutic. Right now, it’s still therapeutic. It’s helpful for people and healthy. It isn’t something I’d shy away from.”

Jake went on to reflect on his journey and the support he has received: “I really do appreciate the time that’s been taken on us.

“I’m very appreciative…[I’m] pretty good, considering these 20 years of time that have come to an end. I can now accept taking on continued treatment, and therapy, and my meds. Everyone’s been very supportive.”

Although he no longer attends fan conventions, Jake still finds joy in Star Wars content, particularly Ahsoka on Disney+. He’s also been revisiting the galaxy through gaming, enjoying classics like Star Wars: The Old Republic and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

“I want to play The Force Unleashed II,” he shared. “I just beat the first one.” While he hasn’t watched the films or shows recently, Jake hinted at a return to the saga, saying, “I’m holding out for May the Fourth with my mom.”

Jake’s mother, Lisa, offered more insight into his recovery. “Jake’s actually getting so much better than he was. It’s a big relief for me and the rest of his family.

“We’re all just thrilled that he’s doing as well as he is, and that he’s working really hard at it. We appreciate that.”

Jake Lloyd may have faced significant challenges, but his story is one of inspiration and healing. We wish him continued progress.
