News of Jeff Baena’s passing was first reported on Saturday, revealing that the filmmaker had tragically died by suicide at the age of 47. Law enforcement sources confirmed that police and fire officials responded to a death investigation call at around 10:30 AM on Friday after an assistant discovered Baena unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Now, just two days after the acclaimed director was tragically found deceased in his Los Angeles home, Molly Shannon is breaking her silence.

Shannon and Baena’s creative partnership flourished through their work together on several notable films, including “The Little Hours” and “Life After Beth.” Both projects also featured Baena’s wife, actress Aubrey Plaza. Shannon also appeared in Baena’s 2020 film “Horse Girl,” further solidifying their professional connection.

The actress took to social media on Saturday, posting a series of heartfelt photos featuring moments shared with Baena. Her caption was marked simply by a broken heart emoji, a powerful symbol of her grief and the profound loss felt by those who knew him.

Jeff Baena made his directorial debut in 2014 with the horror-comedy “Life After Beth,” a film that featured an ensemble cast including John C. Reilly, Molly Shannon, and Aubrey Plaza herself. In a previous conversation with People, Plaza reflected on the unique experience of working alongside Baena during the COVID-19 pandemic. “It was very hectic while we were making the show because we were quarantined and Jeff, he created the show; it was his idea,” she said. “Our house became this strange post-production facility and he’s downstairs on his Zooms or on his sessions and I’m upstairs editing, [and] we’re just going back and forth.”

She added, “We were quarantined for months and months like everybody else. And we did enjoy it. I think it was, obviously other than all of the catastrophic things happening in the world, just on a personal level, relationship level, kind of nice to just be forced to be in one place for that long. Could have gone either way, I guess.”

Plaza also highlighted the advantages of sharing a creative industry with her husband, explaining, “I think that when you’re with someone that is in your field, they understand what you’re dealing with on a deeper level. So obviously you are able to support each other and really understand kind of the journey that we’re both on.”

Following the news, many celebrities and fans took to X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, to share their condolences and pay tribute to the late director.
