A tattoo artist is facing backlash after tattooing a nine-year-old girl who initially wanted an image of President-elect Donald Trump on her neck. Instead, he tattooed the American flag on her arm after receiving permission from her parents.

Images and videos of a tattoo went viral on social media after the artist, CutzSosa from Black Onyx Empire Tattoo in Yuma, shared his experience on Instagram. In his post, he mentioned that a girl and her parents traveled to Arizona specifically to get a tattoo of Donald Trump last year. However, he convinced her to opt for an American flag tattoo on her arm instead. According to the Daily Mail, the tattoo artist also tried to dissuade her parents by quoting a price of $500 for the tattoo, although its actual cost was only $80.
“Told her in a year if she still wanted the Trump [tattoo], then to get it, but to think on it,” the artist explained. The girl and her family returned a year later to have the tattoo touched up, and she changed her mind about the Trump portrait. Although Arizona allows minors to get tattoos with parental consent, the post sparked criticism online.

Ben Shaw from the Alliance of Professional Tattooists weighed in, calling Arizona’s lax tattoo regulations for minors “frustrating.” “It gives professionals a bad reputation,” Shaw said. “A 10-year-old child with a professional tattoo degrades the entire field.”
