Some new details have surfaced for the upcoming film adaptation of the hit horror game Until Dawn thanks to CES 2025.

It was revealed that rather than a direct adaptation of the game’s story, the movie will introduce entirely new characters and a fresh premise, while still staying within the Until Dawn universe.

Peter Stormare, who played the creepy Dr. Alan J. Hill in the game, appeared at CES to tease the project. According to TechRadar, Stormare confirmed that he’ll reprise his role in the film, making him one of the few direct connections to the game.

He said: “The movie is set in the Until Dawn universe but has a new plot and cast of victims,” suggesting that fans can expect the same eerie tone and atmosphere, even as the story explores uncharted territory.

The cast of the film includes Ella Rubin (The Idea of You), Michael Cimino (Never Have I Ever), Ji-young Yoo (Expats), and Odessa A’zion (Hellraiser).

Alongside Stormare, Maia Mitchell and Belmont Cameli are also set to star. While Rami Malek and Hayden Panettiere, who headlined the game, won’t be returning, this new lineup brings fresh new talent.

The movie was written by Blair Butler (The Invitation) with contributions from Gary Dauberman (Salem’s Lot), and the film is directed by David F. Sandberg, known for Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation.

Sandberg is excited to return to his horror roots, and he previously said: “I’ve been longing to do horror again. This film explores the many great subgenres of horror to create the most terrifying experience possible.

“Capturing the essence of the game but with new characters, it serves as a great stand-alone introduction to the world for the newcomer as well as offers something new that the fans of the game will enjoy.”

Sandberg’s emphasis on blending horror subgenres is particularly exciting, as Until Dawn the game is celebrated for its ability to weave together slasher tropes, psychological scares, and supernatural elements.

The original Until Dawn game followed a group of friends stranded at a secluded mountain lodge one year after a tragic accident.

Players navigated their survival through a “choose-your-own-adventure” format, making decisions that shaped the narrative and led to countless possible endings.

Its story mixed slasher horror with the sinister lore of Wendigos, creating a uniquely interactive and cinematic experience.

While the movie won’t adapt this exact storyline, it’s good to know that the film will remain true to the franchise’s spirit of tension and terror.

Described as “an R-rated love letter to the horror genre,” the film promises to deliver a chilling experience for both newcomers and fans of the game.
