Season 2, Episode 12 — Death

Ramon Rodriguez makes a triumphant return for season three of Will Trent. He captivates as the character who is more self-aware, funnier, and sexier than ever. Strict adherence to his moral code, while commendable, leads Trent into an amusing and complicated situation. Trent is in a self-imposed exile in a literal bedroom community in Tennessee. He works as a private detective photographing the illicit acts of his neighbors. But that’s not the whole story. Let’s review.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) agents are at a backyard barbeque. We learn that Special Agent Michael Ormewood (Jake McLaughlin) is still a single and highly involved parent who is happy and proud of his kids. That was good to see. The host asks two officers to make an ice run. Police gotta police — so they decide to check out a suspicious vehicle. Unfortunately, Officer Chester is shot to death, and the other is wounded, but lives to give some important clues that lead Special Agent Faith Mitchell (Iantha Richardson) to the doorstep of a bad guy named Rafael Wexford (Antwayn Hopper).

Faith, the lead investigator, immediately butts heads with the local police — but no worries. She gains command over the dozens of cops on site and delivers a phone to Wexler to begin negotiations. Wexler uses the phone to make one demand: “Get me Will Trent.” GBI Deputy Director Amanda Wagner (Sonja Sohn) goes to Tennessee and gets him Will Trent.

However, there is tension between Trent and his former partner Faith and his dog sitter, Nico (Cora Lu Tran). These relationships cast a long shadow on Trent’s behaviors, decisions, and interactions throughout the episode. For instance, against Faith’s advice, he walks into Wexler’s house unarmed because he once lived there. The two men share a secret. Wexler hints at ‘taking the fall’ for something Trent did so he could live the life he has. We don’t know the details of what happened – yet. We do know that Trent trusts Wexler is telling the truth when he says he did not kill Officer Chester. Wexler points the GBI toward a rival gang, the Grove Park Boys, which Faith and Michael follow up on.

Trent has the comedic and investigative brains of Columbo or Monk, coupled with the brawn of Detective Elliot Stabler (Law & Order SVU). Maybe not quite that brawny, but you get my meaning. Although Trent does disarm Wexler and the owner of a stolen car — both of whom were pointing guns at him. The writing is sharp in these scenes, and Rodriquez’s comedic timing is impeccable.

Trent’s investigation led him to a meeting with Assistant District Attorney Marion Alba (Gina Rodriquez). Alba was supposed to meet with the dead officer (Chester). When Alba hastens to leave their meeting, Trent divulges almost everything we learned about his character gradually unveiled in previous seasons. For example, he blurts out that he arrested the love of his life (Angie) and that he has dyslexia. Like the rest of us, Alba is hooked on Trent’s very human struggles that infuse the show with heartfelt moments and humor, like in this scene. She likes him and trusts him enough to reveal Chester was working with her on a RICO (organized crime) case. Trent’s dilemmas aren’t just plot devices; they feel authentic, relatable, and deeply engaging, drawing us into his world with a mix of empathy and laughter.

One of my favorite scenes is when Faith hits Trent with a stapler. Underneath her anger is a deep concern for her friend, who abandoned her six months ago because of his unyielding principles and the chaotic reality he navigates. Nico demands that he sleep in the garage as she takes Betty (his dog) from him. Like Faith, Nico has big feelings lingering in the form of trust issues, emotional baggage, and a heightened sense of caution as Trent reminds them all that he’s just a visitor.

Trent, Faith, and Michael’s investigations lead them to conclude that Wexler is innocent when Wexler surrenders on the TV news. Trent goes to visit Wexler in jail. He asks him why he’s confessing to a murder he didn’t commit. Cryptically, Wexler tells Trent he doesn’t know everything about him and begs him to keep looking.

The GBI team returns to Wexler’s house. Using his dyslexia to boost his powers of observation, Trent recalls Grandmother Pearl asking, “Is that my Sunny?” Shout out to Marla Gibbs who is still working. Trent finds marks on the door frame that parents use to measure the growth of their children. One mark says Sunny. Faith finds Wexler’s laptop. Sunny is the password, and the screen has a picture of a little girl with duct tape on her mouth. Trent has the answer to why Wexler confessed to something he didn’t do. Someone kidnapped his daughter!

I love this show because it isn’t just a show; it’s a masterclass in blending comedy with genuine human conflict. If you’re looking for a series that combines wit, warmth, and a touch of existential crisis, this one continues to be a must-watch. Come back next week. The story with Wexler, the RICO case with Assistant District Attorney Alba, and Will’s full return is sure to unfold. I can’t wait.

What did you think about this episode? Do you understand what happened with the criminal case against Angie? Do you think Will and Angie are over?

Overall Rating:

9/10

I am a self-identified ‘woke boomer’ who hails from an era bathed in the comforting glow of a TV, not a computer screen. Navigating the digital world can sometimes leave me feeling a bit unsure, but I approach it with curiosity and a willingness to learn. Patience and kindness in this new landscape are truly valued. Let’s embrace the journey together with appreciation and a touch of humor!
