Mark Hamill may always be best known as Luke Skywalker, but one of his more recent collaborations with horror master Mike Flanagan has given him the chance to explore uncharted territory in his acting career.

In Netflix’s The Fall of the House of Usher, Hamill plays a character that is a soulless, amoral lawyer, and he credits Flanagan for giving him this rare opportunity.

Appearing on the Potlickin podcast, Hamill expressed gratitude for the role, describing it as unlike anything he’s done on screen.

While he has portrayed villains in his voice acting career, including his iconic turn as the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series, this role was a significant milestone for his live-action work.

Hamill said: “It was the first time I ever got to do [something like this]. I did atypical roles all the time in voiceover. I mean, you play all these different gangsters and, well, like I said, a gangster squirrel. But this was the first time I ever got to do it on camera. And I’m really grateful for [Mike Flanagan].”

For decades, Hamill has battled the shadow of Luke Skywalker, finding himself typecast early in his career. While his resume may appear diverse and spans everything from sci-fi to animation his most groundbreaking roles have largely been in voice work. Flanagan, however, saw beyond Hamill’s legacy as Luke.

The result was a chilling performance in The Fall of the House of Usher that highlights Hamill’s versatility and willingness to take creative risks. It was fun to watch him step into the shoes of a cold and calculating sociopath.

Hamill didn’t seek out the role, Flanagan approached him directly. The acclaimed writer-director recognized an untapped potential and gave him a role that has redefined his career.

For Hamill, this opportunity was a professional milestone and a validation of his talent. “I’m really grateful,” he emphasized, reflecting on the trust Flanagan placed in him.

Hamill will next be seen in Flanagan’s film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Life of Chuck. Flanagan praised Hammil’s performance in that saying:

“I just did a movie this past fall that I’m very proud of, it has a real doozy of a monologue in it that Mark Hamill delivers. It’s my favorite piece of acting I’ve ever seen from Mark Hamill, it’s four and a half minutes. It’s just… yes!”
