EXCLUSIVE: New Europe Film Sales has boarded Icelandic director Hlynur Pálmason’s upcoming feature The Love That Remains, his latest work after Oscar-shortlisted work Godland.

The sales acquisition sees the Warsaw-based company team once again with Icelandic production company Still Vivid and Denmark’s Snowglobe.

The new feature that was shot in Eastern Iceland under-the-radar and is due to be completed in 2025. According to the official description, the drama “tenderly captures a year in the life of a family as the parents navigate their separation. Through both playful and heartfelt moments, the film portrays the bittersweet essence of faded love and shared memories amidst the changing seasons.

New Europe will commence sales on the movie at the Berlinale’s European Film Market in February. Prior to that, the team behind the film will present first clips to attendees of Göteborg Nordic Film Market at the end of this month.

The Love That Remains is produced by Anton Máni Svansson of Iceland’s Still Vivid and Katrin Pors of Denmark’s Snowglobe.

The cast includes Saga Garðarsdóttir (Woman at War), Sverrir Gudnason (Borg vs. McEnroe), Ída Mekkín Hlynsdóttir (Godland), Þorgils Hlynsson (Nest), and Grímur Hlynsson (Nest).

Pálmason also takes cinematographer credits and is working again with regular collaborators, including editor Julius Krebs Damsbo, sound designer Björn Viktorsson and production designer Frosti Friðriksson, among others.

“We are immensely proud to present The Love That Remains, a film that is as warm, moving, and beautiful as it is playful, fun, and surprising. Once again, we have collaborated with our esteemed co-producers at Hobab, Film I Väst, and Maneki Films, and the exceptional sales team at New Europe,” said Pors and Svansson in a statement.

New Europe has handled international sales on all of Pálmason’s features to date, spanning Godland, which premiered in Cannes Un Certain Regard, Winter Brothers (Locarno competition) and A White, White Day (Cannes Critics’ Week), as well as his 2022 short Nest (Berlinale Special).

“It’s been an absolute joy to follow Hlynur’s and his regular collaborators bringing such beautiful family chronicles to the screen with a humour, warmth and heart, set amidst visually arresting Icelandic landscape that glues you to the screen. It feels like something you didn’t expect you may need this season” added New Europe’s Head of Acquisitions Marcin Łuczaj.

Co-producers are Mikkel Jersin and Eva Jakobsen at Snowglobe (Denmark), Nima Yousefi of HOBAB (Sweden), Didar Domehri of Maneki Films (France), Anthony Muir and Kristina Börjeson of Film I Väst (Sweden), Olivier Père and Rémi Burah of Arte France Cinema (France).
