Following an incident while skiing, Queen Sonja of Norway was recently hospitalized. The update was shared by the royal family of Norway in a statement. Following this news, many well-wishers took to the internet to express their concern regarding Queen Sonja’s health. Here’s what’s currently known about Queen Sonja’s hospitalization and what happened to her.

What happened to Queen Sonja of Norway?

According to a report by Sweden Herald, Norway’s Queen Sonja was immediately hospitalized on Saturday, January 11, 2025, after she faced a health issue while skiing.

The queen is suffering from atrial fibrillation or an unsteady heartbeat. As per the statement given by the Royal Palace of Norway, the 87-year-old suffered a sudden flare-up due to her existing heart issue while she was skiing, leading to the authorities rushing her to hospital.

Queen Sonja was discharged from hospital on Sunday, January 12. The revelation was made by the Norwegian royal court in a statement. They announced, “The Queen has today been discharged from Lillehammer hospital with a normal heart rhythm.”

After the news of Queen Sonja getting hospitalized went viral, many well-wishers came forward to wish Her Majesty a speedy recovery. Furthermore, the Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Støre gave a statement to NTB, Norway’s news agency. He stated, “I wish the queen a speedy recovery and hope she will soon be ready for new skiing trips.”

Queen Sonja of Norway has been quite active in the last few years, taking up numerous royal duties. As per the Sweden Herald, the queen didn’t have many activities scheduled and was last working on Thursday. Trond Norén Isaksen, who is a royal expert, had a conversation with NTB as stated by the outlet, where he disclosed the queen had not experienced any health issues right before the skiing incident.
