On January 16, 2025, fans of Aaliyah Haughton celebrated what would have been her 46th birthday with a special tribute: the release of the Barbie Music Series Aaliyah Doll.
Priced at $55, this limited-edition doll was made available exclusively on Mattel Creations’ official website and was initially offered to members of the brand’s Barbie Club 59. Additionally, it was set to be available for a one-day sale at Target, but reports indicated that it quickly sold out, highlighting the enduring popularity of the iconic R&B singer.
The doll is a striking representation of Aaliyah, adorned in a faux leather outfit reminiscent of her memorable “One in a Million” music video. This design choice reflects Aaliyah’s unique style and influence on the music industry, making it a fitting homage to her legacy.
Tragically, Aaliyah’s life was cut short when she died in a plane crash on August 25, 2001, at the age of 22. The plane, which was transporting her and members of her team from the Bahamas back to Florida after a video shoot, crashed shortly after takeoff, leading to a devastating loss felt by fans and the music community. However, friends fans and family have promised to keep her legacy alive, and they’re doing just that.

In the creation of the Barbie doll, Aaliyah’s brother, Rashad Haughton, played an integral role, working closely with Mattel to ensure that the doll embodied his sister’s essence and style. This collaboration is part of a broader effort by Haughton to preserve and promote Aaliyah’s legacy.
“It’s like that job that I had with her is still continuing. And obviously it’s emotional at times, but it’s also wonderful because there’s a lot of meaning in that,” he expresses. “It brings back memories and it continues on dreams that we had when she was here. In a lot of ways, it makes me feel like things are continuing on as they should, and those dreams are still valuable and they’re still real,” he told the Today Show.
Haughton describes his partnership with Mattel as “a dream come true” for both himself and Aaliyah. “It was something that I always wanted because I know it was something that was my sister’s dream,” he said.
