Curious about the TikTok unban and how it was restored so quickly? After facing a sudden ban in the United States, TikTok resumed its services within a few hours. It was due to direct intervention by Donald Trump. This sparked widespread questions, including, is TikTok back for good?

Here’s what happened and how the situation unfolded.

TikTok unbanned after 14 hours of downtime

On January 18, 2025, TikTok halted operations in the United States. However, TikTok restored its services the following day. The platform announced this development via X (formerly Twitter), stating, “In agreement with our service providers, TikTok is in the process of restoring service.”

Donald Trump played a pivotal role in the TikTok unban. He posted on Truth Social, explaining his decision to provide TikTok with additional time to comply with federal requirements. He wrote, “I will issue an executive order on Monday to extend the period of time before the law’s prohibitions take effect, so that we can make a deal to protect our national security.” Trump added that he wants the “United States to have a 50% ownership position in a joint venture.” This will ensure TikTok’s operation under secure terms.

Furthermore, Trump asserted that he wants his inauguration to be telecasted on the application. In its statement, TikTok also expressed its gratitude toward Trump stating that they “will work with President Trump on a long-term solution that keeps TikTok in the United States.”

TikTok’s ban stemmed from a law that was passed by the Biden administration. According to this law, the app would pose a threat to national security, as lawmakers believed that China could misuse the app to collect data. The law further stated that TikTok would be allowed to operate only if its ownership is transferred from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance to a US owner. (via NBC)
