After nearly two years since its original premiere at Fantastic Fest, The Toxic Avenger reboot is officially getting a theatrical release.
When is The Toxic Avenger releasing in theaters?
Cineverse announced on Tuesday that it has come to an agreement with Lionsgate to release the film sometime in 2025. Cineverse is also the entertainment company behind the distribution for the Terrifier series. Prior to the agreement, the film had been reportedly having trouble finding a distributor due to how violent the film was.
In a statement on the news (via Variety), director Macon Blair praised the deal, and said he was happy fans would get the chance to see the movie in theaters, describing it as a “fun rowdy movie” that you’d want to see with a crowd.
“I’m beyond grateful to the team behind ‘The Toxic Avenger’ who were so supportive and steady-handed as we searched for the perfect distribution partner for our film,” said director Blair in a statement. “It’s so cool that folks will have the chance to see this in theaters, it’s a fun rowdy movie you wanna see with a crowd. Mutant hero smashes bad guys with a mop: perfect entertainment for the whole family! Our goal was always to preserve the heart and spirit of the original Toxie (which was seared into my brain at a very young age) and try to make something that Troma fans would dig and at the same time do something with the character that feels fresh. Lloyd and Michael at Troma have been a blast to work with, absolutely everyone at Legendary are stars, and I can’t wait to start working with the champs at Cinverse to bring this version of Toxie to fans new and old.”
The new movie was originally filmed in 2021, with the project acting as the opening film of Fantastic Fest in 2023, before also playing at a variety of other film festivals that year. The movie serves as a reboot to the iconic 1984 film of the same name, which was directed by Michael Herz and Lloyd Kaufman, and was produced by Troma Entertainment. The film would go on to become a cult classic genre film, and spawn off an entire media series based around the character.
The Toxic Avenger reboot stars Peter Dinklage, Luisa Guerreiro, Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Kevin Bacon, Sarah Niles, Julia Davis, Julian Kostov, Elijah Wood, David Yow, Macon Blair, Jonny Coyne, Jane Levy, and Rebecca O’Mara.
