James Cameron recently revealed to Stuff NZ that he’s screened an early cut of Avatar: Fire and Ash to a select few people, and if the early reactions are anything to go by, the filmmaker has makes another epic chapter in the ongoing story that fans will love.

Cameron shared: “I’ve shown it to a few selected people and the feedback has been it’s definitely the most emotional and maybe the best of the three so far.”

That’s a big claim, considering the franchise has already cemented itself as a box office juggernaut. But Cameron genuinely believes in what they’ve crafted. He continued:

“We’ll find out, you know, but I feel pretty good about it, and the work is exceptional from the actors. It’s pretty heart-wrenching in a good way.”

This third installment brings back Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, and Stephen Lang as the saga returns to Pandora. This time, the story will introduce the Ash People, a new Na’vi faction tied to the planet’s volcanic regions. It looks like a darker, more intense chapter in the Avatar universe.

Cameron goes on to make it clear that he isn’t interested in playing it safe. He said that he’s well aware of the risks that come with pushing creative boundaries for films like these:

“It’s a tricky thing. We could be getting high on our own supply here, and everybody who looks at it goes, ‘F*ck, that’s not what I signed up for.’ But if you’re not making brave choices, you’re wasting everybody’s time and money. That alone is not sufficient to create success, but it’s necessary. You’ve got to break the mold every fricking time.”

Cameron has two more sequels mapped out beyond Fire and Ash, but as of right now, we’re waiting to see if the third film delivers on the emotional weight and bold storytelling that Cameron is talking about.

Avatar: Fire and Ash lands in theaters on December 19, 2025.
