Genre fans have had next month circled on their calendars because the three essential TV shows to watch in April include some of the very best sci-fi series in entertainment.
One of What to Watch’s top picks this month is the most openly political Star Wars story to date, while the other sci-fi option is a more grounded anthology that isn’t far from the world we live in.
Outside of science fiction, HBO’s Emmy-worthy video game adaptation is back for its second season. With Succession finished, maybe The Last of Us has a real shot at the Best Drama Emmy in September.
If there’s one thing these shows have in common, it’s the long wait between seasons. Two of our picks will likely return, but a multi-year gap between seasons isn’t uncommon. So enjoy them while they’re here.
Black Mirror (April 10)
What’s the Black Mirror? It’s your smartphone screen, and chances are very good that it’s either in your pocket or in your hand right now. Netflix brought Charlie Brooker’s dark anthology sci-fi series to a global audience, And this isn’t the kind of show that’s going to make viewers feel good about technology’s invasive presence in their everyday lives.
Black Mirror Season 7 will feature a sequel to the popular “USS Callister” episode from Season 4, with Cristin Milioti, Jimmi Simpson, Michaela Coel, Billy Magnussen, and Milanka Brooks reprising their roles.
Plot details about the other episodes are largely under wraps, but this season’s guest stars include former Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi, Deadpool and Wolverine’s Emma Corrin, Awkwafina, Issa Rae, Paul Giamatti, and more.
Watch Black Mirror on Netflix on April 10.
The Last of Us (April 13)
How do you out-Walking Dead a series like The Walking Dead? For one thing, HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us didn’t overstay its welcome during its inaugural season in 2023. Chernobyl’s Craig Mazin and Last of Us co-creator Neil Druckmann didn’t dumb down the game’s plot and they even improved upon it with some fantastic stories about the emotional bond between Joel (Pedro Pascal) and the young girl he has to protect, Ellie (Bella Ramsey).
Season 2 picks up a few years later, with Joel and Ellie’s relationship strained over the things he did to save her in the Season 1 finale. This year’s storyline will partially adapt The Last of Us Part II, as the consequences of Joel’s actions are felt by both himself and Ellie. The zombie-like infected remain a threat, but the greatest danger to Joel and Ellie is other survivors like Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), a new character who is looking for revenge.
Watch The Last of Us on HBO and Max on April 13.
Andor (April 22)
We already know the ending of Andor, the prequel series for 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. That didn’t stop the first season from wowing us in 2022 with perhaps the most mature look at the Star Wars universe to date. The very first time he appeared in Rogue One, Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) murdered one of his own allies because his survival threatened the Rebel Alliance. The first season of Andor revealed how Cassian became radicalized against the Empire, with some of the best acting and writing in the franchise to date.
Season 2 continues the march towards Rogue One, as every three episodes covers a year in Cassian’s life. That may be why Disney+ is releasing three episodes per week for the duration of Andor’s final season. Cassian’s story may be coming to a close, but the new episodes will reintroduce the fan-favorite droid K-2SO (Alan Tudyk), as well as Rogue One’s primary villain, Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn).
Watch Andor on Disney+ on April 22.
