Taking to social media, Cher expressed her grief with a brief yet touching message. “VALUS,” the music icon wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on April 2, adding, “Will miss u.”
Cher fondly recalled their time together, describing Val Kilmer as “funny, crazy, pain in the ass, GREAT FRIEND.” The icon also praised his exceptional talent, highlighting his performance as Mark Twain, seemingly in Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn (2014) and in the play Citizen Twain (2016). She further admired his courage, noting that he was “brave” throughout his illness.
For those unaware, Cher and Val Kilmer first crossed paths at a birthday party in the ’80s, forming a friendship before their relationship turned romantic. Reflecting on their bond in a 2021 interview with People, the singer shared, “We became friends because we laughed at the same things constantly. He would sleep over and it was just a friendship [at first].”
Cher and Val Kilmer’s relationship was also a mix of passion and respect for each other’s artistic abilities. “It went from madly in love and laughing hysterically to respecting each other’s ability,” she quipped. However, their strong personalities sometimes caused friction. Cher described them as “alpha males.”
Despite their romantic relationship ending, Cher and Val Kilmer remained close friends. The latter even credited her with supporting him through his battle with throat cancer, which he was diagnosed with in 2015. Cher admitted she was surprised at how they managed to maintain their friendship over the years. “I don’t know how we stayed friends, we just did. We didn’t try. We just were.”
