Despite a less-than-glorious start to the MLB season, with manager Aaron Boone’s side sitting on a 19-16 record at the top of a competitive AL East, the New York Yankees find themselves at the front of the American League betting odds.
Those odds are perhaps mainly down to last season’s comprehensive 4-1 win over the Cleveland Guardians, which earned them the American League title in 2024, albeit Boone’s side were then picked apart by the all-conquering Los Angeles Dodgers in a World Series defeat that was over in five games.
Fans who want to make the most of the great odds at BetMGM, where the Yankees can be picked up at +320 to win the American League, can make that bet even tastier by making use of this amazing BetMGM promo today.
The Yankees started their season on something of a roll and by mid-April were coasting with a 13-7 record, but a 6-9 run, including a run of three successive losses at Yankee Stadium, has set them back a little, albeit none of their divisional rivals have been able to overhaul them.
Among those taking the flak for poor form is pitch Devin Williams, leading to Boone seeking to protect the pitcher from becoming a scapegoat, commenting after a 3-4 loss to the Padres.
“Um, look, I think once he gets righted and really starts to string them together, as great as he’s been will show up. And then you start building real confidence, because you’re dialed and you have the ability to dominate. So we just gotta continue to stack those, and it doesn’t necessarily happen overnight when you go through it a little bit. And we all go through it a little bit. We all go through tough times and stretches in this game, and he’ll get through it.”
30-year-old Williams moved to the Yankees last December after five years at the Milwaukee Brewers, and it would be fair to say that the two-time MLB All-Star pick has not covered himself in glory, though the criticism he has faced has been somewhat misguided, in the sense that he is not the underperforming member of Boone’s roster.
Williams claimed that the conditions against the Padres played a part in his misfire, claiming, fairly. “It was the landing spot, to be honest with you,”
“I couldn’t figure it out with the release point on my fastball. It was getting away from me.”
“Both walks were obviously not what you’re trying to do.”
“But I was kind of battling myself there with the landing spot. Tough to control the fastball today.”
“It’s one of those nights where you’re not only battling the hitter. I was battling the mound. But we’re all given the same set of circumstances, and I couldn’t pull through tonight.” Williams added.
The loss represents the fifth time in eight games that the New York Yankees have lost a lead in the eighth inning or later, and that’s a situation Boone will want to address sooner rather than later.
Nonetheless, the Yankees are still in control in the AL East, but one gets the sense that should they continue to stutter, the likes of the Boston Red Sox, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Tampa Bay Rays could well pounce.
