Mother’s Day brought us all the feels, but our hearts skipped a beat when actors KJ Smith and Skyh Black announced they’re expecting their first child! The Sistas and All The Queen’s Men stars spilled their sweet news exclusively to Essence, sharing a personal story that’s straight out of a family fertility fairy tale.
KJ Smith and Skyh Black Are Expecting A Baby!
KJ, who’s been candid about her journey with fibroids, PCOS, and previously not wanting children, told Essence that meeting Skyh completely shifted her outlook. Initially set on being everyone’s favorite “rich auntie,” KJ says her hubby’s unwavering support and leadership opened her heart to motherhood. “I said, ‘This would be a good experience with you as my partner and husband,’” she shared. “Now I want as many as I can have!”

Skyh, meanwhile, has always dreamed of fatherhood—especially given his own challenging relationship with his biological father. He’s already starting morning affirmations with the baby bump, speaking positivity and love every day. “It’s something I’ve always dreamed of—connecting with my kid, fostering their dreams. I’m elated,” Skyh told Essence.
KJ and Skyh further showed their baby bliss in gorgeous shots on Instagram. From ethereal water images to picturesque portrait-style photos, KJ is glowing. Her fits were feminine, flirty, and fabulous – as every new mommy wants to be.

The road wasn’t easy: KJ planned to begin IVF treatments due to fertility concerns, only to discover she was already pregnant in January 2025, days before her fertility specialist appointment. Talk about divine timing!
Despite facing a tough first trimester battling prenatal depression, KJ credits her faith, family, and supportive village for helping her through. Sis even powered through filming season nine of “Sistas,” leaning on strength from her ancestors and encouragement from other working moms. Now in her fifth month, she’s feeling empowered and fearless, confidently preparing for motherhood.
The couple, who tied the knot in a dreamy, star-studded Malibu wedding last September, are nesting and building their support system, choosing emotional support and practical help over a traditional baby shower – for now. We love this honest take on motherhood.
