While speaking on ‘All The Smoke: Unplugged,’ with fellow NBA retiree Matt Barnes, Gilbert talked about the scary moments surrounding the fiery car crash that involved his 18-year-old son Alijah — whom he shares with former ‘Basketball Wives LA’ star Laura Govan.
Gilbert told Matt that he never received any alerts from his son’s CyberTruck that he had been involved in a crash. He added, “The car malfunctioned on him. The steering wheel went limp and ran right into a tree. Once he got his personality back—which is when they took the drugs out of him—our jokes came back.”

Gilbert Arenas Claims Son Alijah ‘Couldn’t Break Windows’ In Fiery Coma-Inducing Tesla CyberTruck Crash
Gilbert recalled jokingly telling his son, “Yeah boy, you almost went extra crispy on me, man.” Matt Barnes reiterated from earlier, “Because you said those windows are bulletproof. He couldn’t break the window.” Gilbert confirmed, “He couldn’t break the window.”
Matt added, “He was stuck in a car that was on fire.” Gilbert continued to combat rumors that Alijah fell asleep at the wheel before his crash. He said:
“I got his phone. I’m looking and I see he’s on the phone. He’s on the phone with 9-1-1. He was on the phone with them for ten minutes. I know he was at least in the car for ten minutes. Once you start talking and realize he couldn’t break the window, and you start doing all the back search on the car… If you’re a parent and your teen has this car, you might want to put a hammer in that joint—something that can break the window because physically… You know, he said he was trying to kick the window and couldn’t.”

As we shared on April 24, news broke that doctors placed Alijah in a medically induced coma following a car accident in his CyberTruck in Los Angeles, CA. ESPN’s Senior NBA insider, Shams Charania, reported:
“Five-star prospect and USC commit Alijah Arenas was involved in a serious car crash early Thursday morning, hospitalized and placed into an induced coma, sources tell ESPN.”
TMZ further reported that Alijah was driving his Tesla CyberTruck when the accident occurred just outside his San Fernando Valley home around 4:55 a.m. The following day, it as reported that Alijah was out of his coma and making “significant progress” after his fiery CyberTruck crash.
A rep for the family told TMZ that Alijah’s development proved “remarkable and hopeful.” However, at the time of the update, the rep noted that Alijah was still intubated, but was able to open his eyes. He was even able to write on a piece of paper to ask if anyone else was hurt in the crash.
