Miley Cyrus shares how Bangerz era impacted her life
Miley Cyrus has opened up about the emotional toll of her Bangerz era. She revealed how her bold transformation in 2013 had a profound impact on both her personal life and family relationships. Speaking to Monica Lewinsky on the June 10 episode of Reclaiming, the pop star reflected on the intense backlash she received during that time. Cyrus said, “That was the time where I just got hit so hard, and I was so embarrassed.” Her siblings were so embarrassed by her actions that they avoided school.
She continued, “I had a lot of guilt about how hard it would’ve been to be my sibling or my parent, and how embarrassing.” Cyrus admitted that she carried guilt for putting her family in that position and found it difficult to face her father, Billy Ray Cyrus. She said, “It was really hard for me to go home and see my dad and look him in the eyes and not feel super embarrassed.”
The pop star added that her Bangerz era also affected her romantic relationships. She said, “No one wanted to date me. Because they didn’t want to be with a woman [whose] sexual expression part was not for them, it was like shared with the world.” Referring to her engagement to Liam Hemsworth, she admitted that the relationship ultimately didn’t last due to that very conflict.
Though the experience was painful, Cyrus shared that therapy helped her process the shame she carried from that period. However, she believes that her transformation shocked people more because of her background as the face of Hannah Montana.
