Scheana Shay explained why she decided to go public with Brock Davies‘ affair in her new book, My Good Side, in an interview on Tuesday.
As she admitted to being hesitant, confirmed whether she thought about divorce, and admitted to feeling sympathetic toward her partner, despite his devastating betrayal, the 40-year-old Vanderpump Rules alum spoke of her insecurities, her desire to protect their daughter, four-year-old Summer Moon, and addressed the possibility of having an open marriage with Brock, 35.
“I went back and forth. It started as absolutely not. It was an eight-month conversation [with Brock]. After several therapy sessions and really talking about it, we decided that this book would be inauthentic if we didn’t put it all in,” Scheana explained during a July 15 interview with Us Weekly.
According to Scheana, both she and Brock were hesitant, but they decided to take the narrative into their own hands out of fear that his other woman would come forward.
“I’d rather it come out in my words,” Scheana revealed.
Although Scheana opted to remain in her marriage post-affair, she confessed that if she and Brock didn’t have Summer, or if she had learned of his infidelity when it occurred, divorce would have been more than an option.
“I would have left,” she confirmed. “I’ve always been a person who said, ‘If I’m ever cheated on, I would leave.’ My ex-husband [Mike Shay] had an emotional affair, which honestly could be worse than physical, but this was such new territory for me to navigate.”
While Brock kept his cheating to himself for some time, he ultimately fessed up because he “worried something would leak,” and Scheana was “thankful it came from him.”
As Pump Rules fans may have heard, Brock credited his affair to fears about starting a family with Scheana while estranged from his first two children.
“It took him a long time to tell me because he was afraid [to have another child]. I can have sympathy now and understand that he felt like he didn’t deserve a second chance at being a father,” Scheana reasoned. “That really broke my heart for him, that he felt like he needed to sabotage something so amazing because he didn’t deserve it.”
Years after learning that Brock cheated on her while she was pregnant, Scheana said their marriage still “takes work every single day.”
“I will forever have insecurities,” she admitted. “Just the other day, I saw him swipe and delete a text, and I’m like, ‘What was that?’ And he’s like, ‘Seriously, Scheana?’ But I genuinely believe he would never do anything like that again.”
“I do trust him. I have forgiven him. … We’ve put in the work in couples therapy. We have a very open line of communication. I want to show people that if you truly love someone, a mistake from their past doesn’t have to define the future of your relationship,” she continued.
Though Brock’s affair occurred amid her time on Pump Rules, Scheana didn’t share the news on camera because she “wasn’t ready.”
“I don’t think our marriage would’ve survived if I did. I wasn’t even protecting Brock in those moments; I was protecting Summer,” she clarified.
As for whether she would consider having an open marriage, Scheana, who confessed to having feelings for another woman before marrying Brock in August 2022, said that while she was curious about the concept, she knows that it “does not end well” when feelings are involved.
“In the beginning, did Brock think, ‘Oh, well, maybe the three of us?’ — I’m sure. But no, that was never going to be anything I was open to because I had learned my lesson from doing that many times in the past,” she concluded.
