A lot of people talk big about leaving the country if Donald Trump gets back in office—but only a few actually follow through. Ellen DeGeneres is one of them.
The former daytime talk show host confirmed she really did leave the U.S., and yes, Trump was part of the reason. As previously reported, the comedian and her wife, actress Portia de Rossi, relocated to the UK ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
While speaking at the Everyman Theatre in the southern English town of Cheltenham on Sunday, Ellen revealed she bought a “part-time house” in the UK. “We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, ‘He got in,’” she said. “And we’re like, ‘We’re staying here.’”
Talking about the English countryside, she added, “It’s absolutely beautiful,” according to the BBC. “We’re just not used to seeing this kind of beauty. The villages and the towns and the architecture – everything you see is charming, and it’s just a simpler way of life.”
“It’s clean. Everything here is just better—the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here.”
Ellen went on to share more about the couple’s new lifestyle: “We moved here in November, which was not the ideal time, but I saw snow for the first time in my life. We love it here. Portia flew her horses here, and I have chickens—and we had sheep for about two weeks.”

More Stars Are Dipping Because of Trump
Ellen’s not the only one who packed up and got the hell out.
Rosie O’Donnell made her move to Ireland in January 2025, citing political concerns, her long-standing beef with Trump, and a desire to protect her nonbinary child. Actress Sophie Turner also headed back to the UK, explaining that gun violence in the U.S., the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and her hopes for a better upbringing for her children were all reasons behind the move.
And let’s be real—we’re sure this list is only going to keep growing.
