Korean dramas have become a huge phenomenon on Netflix, with shows like Squid Game and All of Us Are Dead drawing historic viewership numbers.

There’s a new Korean drama series, Trigger, streaming now on Netflix that had us on the edge of our seats.

It’s a violent, wild ride that promises to raise some big questions, and it stars some major K-drama talent to boot.

Watch With Us is breaking down the new Netflix series Trigger, and why you should watch it, especially if you’re a fan of the streamer’s other hit show, The Night Agent.

The Premise Is Frighteningly Timely

In real life, South Korea has incredibly strict gun regulations — a gun permit requires the citizen to pass a written exam, for example. In the world of Trigger, firearms have been banned entirely. But the fragile peace created by the lack of weapons is shattered when an influx of illegal guns sweeps the nation. Overnight, millions of people have free guns delivered to them with no explanation.

Lee Do (Kim Nam-gil), a former military sniper turned police officer, begins investigating the gun trade and finds himself entangled with Moon Baek (Kim Young-kwang), a mysterious arms dealer with a dual personality and a carefully orchestrated agenda.

Netflix had plenty to celebrate last week. Squid Game season 3 continued to be a streaming juggernaut, racking up 43.6 million views last week. Viewers couldn’t get enough of the show as Squid Game seasons 1 and 2 re-entered the most popular show list after a long absence. Thank You! You have successfully subscribed. Subscribe […]

For American audiences, gun regulation is a hotly debated topic, with strong opinions on both sides of the aisle. It will be fascinating to see how another culture handles this subject matter. When guns have been virtually non-existent for decades, how would a culture respond to their resurgence?

“It is a story about a situation that we all have imagined at least once,” director Kwon Oh-seung told the Netflix PR team. “This series explores guns from a different perspective, putting them at the center of the story.”

The Action Sequences Look Electric

In the 1-minute, 34-second trailer, we see motorcycle chases, people crashing through windows, criminals being tackled and much more. Glass is shattered by bullets and faces are sprayed with blood. Trigger looks like it will have incredible fight choreography and gritty, thrilling action sequences. We can’t wait to see what kind of crazy stunts will be performed in this Netflix show.

The Lead Actors Are K-Drama Powerhouses

Kim Nam-gil is a pro in the Korean drama space, best known for leading roles in the drama Portrait of a Beauty, the crime thriller Memoir of a Murderer and the crime-comedy television drama The Fiery Priest. You only have to look at the comments under the YouTube video of the trailer to see what a big star he is — the excitement to see him in a new role is palpable. (“Kim Nam Gil, the best actor in the universe,” wrote one delighted fan.)

It seems like nothing can slow down Netflix‘s momentum even during the hottest months of the summer. Netflix’s new crime drama, The Waterfront, is dominating the charts and seems like a strong candidate for renewal. Ditto Untamed, a crime drama set at the Yosemite National Park. Meanwhile, Mr. Robot has found new life on Netflix […]

Kim Young-kwang, who started out as a model before making his acting debut in 2008, has steadily built a strong reputation in both film and television. He won the Best New Actor award at the prestigious Baeksang Arts Awards in 2019 for his film On Your Wedding Day and has since become a veteran actor in his own right. He’s known for his versatile performances in projects like Somebody and Call It Love. His role in Trigger promises a violent and unpredictable intensity that will be a thrill to watch.

The characters’ relationship as two men on opposite sides of the law also looks like it will have a fascinating dynamic, as Moon Baek seems to be suggesting a team-up, much to Lee Do’s chagrin.

You can watch Trigger on Netflix now.
