President Donald Trump is ruffling some feathers after suggesting that undocumented workers are “naturally” fit for farm labor and that “inner city” Americans won’t do it.

Although Trump came into his second term heavily swinging his deportation bat, him and his administration appeared to take a step back when the immigrations raids started targeting farms. But then, his admin soon picked the bat back up.
Now, in a new reporting by Politico, officials are debating how to help farmers with migrant labor without appearing to offer special treatment and amnesty to undocumented workers in the fields.

Per Politico, President Trump said that his administration will continue to deport criminals, but will “work with” farmers to find migrant workers — who often enter the country illegally but pay taxes. Trump suggested that his administration was working on creating a program for some workers.
The proposal would require them to leave the United States and reenter through a legal immigration program. Reportedly, anti-immigration individuals don’t favor this idea as the exception creates a slippery slope.
Politico also reported that the Trump administration has also looked into expanding access to the H-2A program for non-seasonal agricultural industries, like dairy.

President Donald Trump Suggests Undocumented Workers Are A ‘Natural’ Fit For Farm Labor
On Tuesday (August 5), Donald Trump — who appears sympathetic to both farmers and those against immigration — told CNBC that the undocumented farm workers aren’t easy to replace. He said:
“I want to work with them. And in some cases, we’re sending them back to their country with a pass back in legally. And we’re doing things that are that are very difficult to do and very complex, but it works really well. We’re sending them back, and then they’re schooling, they’re learning, they’re coming in, they’re coming in legally. We have a lot of that going on, but we’re taking care of our farmers. We can’t let our farmers not have anybody.”
Despite immigration critics claiming that Americans could fill the jobs, Trump acknowledged the truth that “people who live in the inner city” won’t do the farm work. He explained:
“You know, you can’t replace them very easily. You know, people that live in the inner city are not doing that work. They’re just not doing that work. And they’ve tried. We’ve tried. Everybody’s tried. They don’t do it. These people do it naturally. Naturally. I said, ‘What happens’ — to a farmer the other day — ’What happens if they get a bad back?’ He said, ‘They don’t get a bad back, sir, because if they get a bad back, they die.’ I said, ‘That’s interesting.’ Isn’t it? In many ways, they’re very, very special people.”
