Nashville has never been short on storytellers, but few blend grit and glamour as seamlessly as Rip Gerber. His latest single, Limited Speed, takes listeners on a high-octane journey through the push-and-pull of a love moving at mismatched tempos, joined by professional race car driver Zoë Barry for the ride.
In a city where slow-burn ballads dominate, Gerber takes a different lane. The song blends his confessional songwriting with cinematic production, crafting an emotional parallel between romance and racing. “It’s about when love’s timing is off,” Gerber says. “One person’s soaking in the moment while the other’s already in the fast lane.”
That concept comes to life in the Limited Speed music video, which Gerber directed himself. It cuts between serene shots of him gliding through Nashville’s 12 South neighborhood and Barry tearing down the track in a McLaren Artura GT4. The visual contrast is electric; Gerber’s steady rhythm against Barry’s no-holds-barred acceleration. As the founder of the all-women-led DART Racing Team, Barry adds a fierce, undeniable presence that mirrors the song’s restless energy.
Lyrically, Limited Speed doesn’t hold back:
“There’s a limited speed that my love can goYou got me falling to the earthFaster than the pull of gravity…”
The track resonates with anyone who’s felt that emotional disconnect, when hearts beat to different clocks. “Sometimes you’re still figuring things out,” Gerber says, “but they’ve already crossed the finish line.”
The single follows his chart-topping Three-Chord Town, which hit #1 on Amazon Music and introduced the world to his deeply personal songwriting style. Gerber’s own backstory reads like a novel — former CIA analyst, Harvard MBA, and even a plumber, before finding his way to music after a string of devastating personal losses in 2020. That search for healing became the spark for his upcoming concept album, Three-Chord Town, due later this year.
Barry’s role in the project goes beyond on-screen performance. Her DART Racing Team; piloting a McLaren Artura GT4 designed by TIME100 artist Mickalene Thomas; has been making waves in motorsports for its commitment to empowering women in high-performance racing. They’ll close out the 2025 season with an all-female lineup competing in the 24H Series Middle East Trophy in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
For Gerber, the connection between his music and Barry’s racing career is obvious: “Both worlds live on adrenaline. Whether you’re chasing a melody or chasing a checkered flag, you’re riding the same kind of high.”
Limited Speed is available now on all major streaming platforms.
