Butterfly dropped all its six episodes on Amazon Prime Video on August 13, 2025, bringing forth a fascinating premise in its season 1 and a cliffhanger ending that left a lot to be desired. The complex spy thriller brimmed with family drama while also exploring greater conspiracies surrounding David (Daniel Dae Kim) and his daughter Rebecca (Reina Hardesty).
Warning- Major spoilers ahead.
Does Daniel Dae Kim’s David Jung die in Butterfly Season 1 ending?
While the ending was quite ambiguous, it is clear that David Jung is alive at the conclusion of season 1. The entire season revolved around Rebecca, a trained assassin, chasing David, who also happened to be her father.
Later in the series, they try to make up for things as David plans to start afresh with Rebecca and his new family, which includes his wife Eunju (Kim Tae-hee) and their young daughter Minhee. While they navigate many complex family dynamics, the secretive spy organization Caddis remains hot on their heels.
In the finale, Juno and the Caddis operatives take Rebecca hostage. David locates the abandoned factory and performs a high-stakes rescue mission. He suffers grave injuries in the process, but gets Rebecca out.
Rebecca stops David from killing Juno after he rescues her. Juno ultimately leaves on a private jet. While David is injured in this sequence, he does not die.
In the closing moments of the series, David and his family discuss leaving for the US to rebuild their lives. However, there is one final twist. David discovers in the restaurant that Eunju is gravely injured. He then notices that Rebecca is not around. He asks the bleeding Eunju if Rebecca had harmed her, but she is seemingly too weak to speak.
The series ends without any explanation as to what happened to Eunju, how the family is still in danger, and what exactly is going on with Rebecca.
Perhaps a second season may delve deeper into the unanswered questions..
