EXCLUSIVE: As India celebrates the 79th anniversary of its independence, the team behind the spiritual sequel to 1997 blockbuster Border have revealed a release date for the war pic.
Through an interactive poster being released today, it’s been revealed Border 2 will hit cinemas in India on January 22, 2026, four days before the country’s annual Republic Day. Some earlier reports had pegged the release for a day later (January 23).
Like Border, which was set during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, the Hindi-language Border 2 will take a hugely patriotic line. However, the filmmakers aren’t calling the new pic a direct sequel as several elements of the story will be different. Sunny Deol is seen on the poster in character as a battle-hardened soldier gripping a bazooka, as he gets ready for frontline actio. We understand he doesn’t play the same role in Border 2 as in the first film.
Directed by Anurag Singh, Border 2 will also star Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, Ahan Shetty, Medha Rana, Mona Singh and Sonam Bajwa with production by Bhushan Kumar and JP Dutta. Gulshan Kumar and T-Series are making the film, in association with Dutta’s JP Films.
“Border is more than a film – it’s an emotion for every Indian,” said Kumar. “With Border 2, we aim to carry forward that legacy and bring it to a new generation. The new release date gives audiences more time to come together and experience the film in theatres during an extended Republic Day weekend.”
“Announcing the date on Independence Day is symbolic. This day reminds us of the sacrifices made by our soldiers for India’s freedom and so does our film. It’s an honour and a privilege to honour their undying spirit through this story.”
