Back in 2022, Disney and Pixar released Lightyear, a spin-off centered around the “real” Buzz Lightyear. While the film earned some positive reviews, it ultimately struggled at the box office, grossing only $226 million worldwide and reportedly losing over $100 million. Now, a few years later, Lightyear is back in the spotlight thanks to some candid comments from Snoop Dogg.

During a recent conversation, the legendary rapper shared how watching the animated sci-fi adventure with his grandson became a little more complicated than expected. Specifically, Lightyear includes a same-sex kiss between two female characters, which is a moment that sparked major controversy at the time and continues to generate debate.

“They’re like, ‘She had a baby — with another woman.’ Well, my grandson, in the middle of the movie is like, ‘Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She’s a woman!'” Snoop recalled.

“Oh shit, I didn’t come in for this shit. I just came to watch the goddamn movie. They just said, ‘She and she had a baby — they’re both women. How does she have a baby?'”

The moment clearly rattled him. “It f*cked me up,” Snoop added. “I’m like, scared to go to the movies. Y’all throwing me in the middle of shit that I don’t have an answer for. It threw me for a loop. I’m like, ‘What part of the movie was this?’ These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer.”

The inclusion of the kiss scene in Lightyear was a big topic of conversation when the film was released. At one point, the moment was even removed from the movie altogether, only to be restored after Pixar employees called out Disney leadership for scrubbing LGBTQ+ representation from their projects.

At the time, Chris Evans, who voiced Buzz Lightyear, defended the scene, saying: “I mean, it’s great. As great as it is — and you know, I’ve been asked the question a few times — it’s nice, and it’s wonderful, it makes me happy.

“It’s tough to not be a little frustrated that it even has to be a topic of discussion. That it is this kind of ‘news.’ The goal is that we can get to a point where it is the norm, and that this doesn’t have to be some uncharted waters, that eventually this is just the way it is.

“That representation across the board is how we make films. Look, it’s an honor to be a part of something that is taking those steps, but the goal is to look back on this time and just be shocked that it took us this long to get there.”

Lightyear may not have made the impact Disney hoped for financially, but the cultural conversation around it clearly hasn’t gone away. And with Snoop Dogg now chiming in, it’s clear that animated films are reaching audiences in ways even the creators might not anticipate.
