Chukwudi Is A Big Fan Of ‘Stranger Things’!

The first show I want to recommend is “To Kill A Monkey,” a Nigerian TV series on Netflix that had me hooked right from the start. This is one of those shows that proves Nigerian storytelling has the creativity, depth, and flair to compete on a global scale. The acting is phenomenal, and the storyline is unpredictable, full of twists that keep you guessing. What blew me away most was how the show manages to balance its gritty themes with such a well-thought-out plot. And then there’s Bucci Franklin’s character, Oboz Da Boss. Every time he is on screen, you just know you are in for something memorable. His presence carries such intensity that you can’t help but look forward to his scenes. The ending left me absolutely stunned, the kind of finale that lingers in your mind long after the credits roll. If you want something different from the usual mainstream binge options, this is definitely the show to try.

The second series I have to put on this list is “Stranger Things.” I know I’m a bit late to the party, but I only just watched it recently, and I finally understand why the entire world was talking about it. From the very first episode, I was blown away. The story manages to blend suspense, supernatural mystery, and good old-fashioned friendship in a way that feels both nostalgic and fresh. The young cast absolutely nailed their roles, but Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven deserves a special mention. I had written about her in the past, but watching her perform in this series made me appreciate her even more. Her character is layered, vulnerable, and powerful all at once. The writing is excellent, the pacing keeps you on the edge of your seat, and the relationships between the characters make you genuinely invested in their journey. I can’t wait for Season 5, which premieres in November. Whether you are a die-hard fan or someone who has never seen an episode, now is the perfect time to dive in. Trust me, it is worth the hype.

Now for a series I just couldn’t get into: Netflix’s “The Last Kingdom.” Before this, I had watched Vikings and absolutely loved it. I fell in love with Ragnar Lothbrok’s character, and later his son Bjorn, so much that at one point I caught myself walking and talking like them. When the series ended, I needed something similar to fill that void, and a colleague recommended “The Last Kingdom.” I gave it a shot, but honestly, it never grabbed me the same way. Maybe I was too attached to “Vikings” and needed something deeper to keep me interested, but the pacing of “The Last Kingdom” just felt too slow for me. I tried to push through, but by the fourth episode, I had to stop. For fans of the show, I get that it has its appeal, but for me, it just didn’t work. I’m sorry, Last Kingdom fans, but you would really have to convince me in a big way to give it another try.

Kelly Is Reminding You That It’s Time For A ‘Friends’ Rewatch

There’s a reason “Friends” has been my comfort show for years, and that’s because it just never gets old. No matter how many times I rewatch it, the punchlines still make me laugh, and honestly, there aren’t a lot of shows out there that can do that. What I love most is how it balances humor with real life. The relationships, the career struggles, the awkward “adulting” moments, it all feels so relatable, yet still lighthearted enough to escape into. Plus, Rachel Green is my favorite TV character of all time. Watching her grow from a spoiled runaway bride into a fashion powerhouse is a glow-up that never gets old.

Switching gears, I also have to recommend “Monk.” It’s another comfort show for me, but in a totally different way. Every episode is basically a mystery puzzle, and it’s so fun trying to figure out the “who, what, when, where, and why” before the big reveal. Plus, Adrian Monk’s quirks and the humor sprinkled throughout keep it from ever feeling too heavy. It’s clever, funny, and just plain entertaining. Whether it’s your first watch or your fiftieth, it always delivers.

Now, for the one I wouldn’t recommend is “Riverdale.” When it first dropped, I was hooked thanks to the dark teen drama, the small-town mystery, and the messy relationships. It had everything I wanted in a binge. But as the seasons went on, it completely lost me. The storylines got stranger and stranger, the plot twists felt forced, and it turned into this chaotic mix of musical episodes, supernatural elements, and random time jumps. What started as a guilty pleasure ended up being frustrating to watch. For me, Riverdale is proof that sometimes shows just don’t know when to quit.

Evie From Paris Gives Her Take On ‘Emily In Paris’

First up: “Breaking Bad.” I should open this with “because.” So, for sure, “because.” But also, just, wow. An overqualified, high school chemistry teacher needing cash to support his family as he battles end-stage cancer. What does he do? He cooks meth with a 20-something he taught back in the day. Early vibes, cooking in the RV. In later seasons, he’s the biggest methamphetamine kingpin in the USA. Things also stay juicy because his brother-in-law is the DEA agent trying to hunt down this mysterious meth king. Bryan Cranston won awards for a reason with Breaking Bad. Because the show isn’t about meth, it’s about a man who is good, but every so slowly, “breaks” bad as he becomes addicted to being the king of the most addictive drug around. BrBa is set in New Mexico, with a fair amount of scenes set South of the Border. I’ve watched it a good 25 times, and there will be more. Bonus recommendation for the Better Call Saul sequel, which focuses on the super-shady lawyer who’s in on it all. Extra special mention to Aaron Paul, who plays Bryan Cranston’s sidekick meth cook and is, in all his baggy pants and beanie hat glory, the only dude who can pull off “whack” and “yo”. And “yo” and “whack.”

“Friends” is up next. 30+ years later and still… “WE WERE ON A BREAK.” I was in my teens when “Friends” first aired in 1994. I wanted the Rachel cut, the close-knit friendships, Monica’s apartment, and a Joey hug. The show centers around six friends in their 20s trying to make it in New York City. Despite having jobs, the gang spends 90% of their time in the coffee house. For a ’90s show, it was also pretty diverse, with Season 1 featuring a lesbian couple and further seasons including people of color, notably Ross’ hot paleontologist girlfriend. Friends is comfort food with no calories. Also, there can’t be any calories, because Joey eats everything. Precious little can make me laugh that hard, but when it comes to laughing and Friends, RIP Matthew Perry, a.k.a. Chandler Bing. These six became icons for a reason, and the scriptwriters are up there with the gods.

You can skip “Emily in Paris.” I’m a snob, here. I am from Paris. The show has its perks: Lily Collins is stupidly stylish and glamorous wherever she goes and manages teeny cobbled streets in heels. Her co-workers are also amusingly and so very “French.” For me, though, it’s too canned. They took a show and dumbed it down, where even the suspense feels predictable. In an age of inclusivity, I will also note that Lily Collins is super slim. Perhaps a little too much given her icon status. The series portrays a young American woman who winds up working in marketing in Paris. She’s good at her job, the boys are all over her, and somehow, she always manages. For me, though, it’s a “watch when there’s nothing else” and no great glee when a new season comes out.

Jacquez Just Didn’t Vibe With ‘The Hunting Wives’

I have a love-hate relationship with scripted television shows. Am I down to join a fandom and watch over 20 seasons of a medical drama? Absolutely. However, only a few programs have really gripped me in such a way over the years. I’m sad to say that my favorite scripted show of all time is no longer airing new episodes, but it will always reign supreme (in my book). So, here I go…

Article continues below advertisement

My first choice would have to be Shonda Rhimes’ political (thriller?) “Scandal.” It stars Kerry Washington as Olivia Pope—a total boss and chaos fixer. She runs with an elite circle of people, including the President of the United States, his Chief of Staff, and leaders of other nations. Her life is also disastrous, riddled with relationship affairs, lies, illegal operations, and, yes, even murder. The biggest gag? She looks like a million bucks in (almost) every scene, making her one of the most fascinating characters I’ve ever seen. Although it’s no longer airing, you can stream all seven seasons on Netflix.

I thought long and hard about my second option and realized that one of my editors, Melanie, would actually love this, given our shared love of basketball. Netflix released a new series called “Running Point.” It stars Kate Hudson as the general manager of a professional basketball team and Brenda Song as her best friend and Chief of Staff. It’s one comedy that actually made me laugh out loud, and the episodes being under 30 minutes made them digestible and the perfect binge product.

Now, for a show that I didn’t love … I could name many, but I’ll stick with something recent and say “The Hunting Wives.” The vibe, lighting, and characters are just … off, and I simply can’t vibe.

Melanie Was ‘Instantly Hooked’ On ‘Nobody Wants This’

I actually don’t watch TV much, and when I do, I find myself rewatching the same shows more often than not. I’ve rewatched “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” “The Office,” “Friends From College,” and “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” more than I probably should admit.

More recently, I binged “Running Point” and loved it! I’m a basketball lover, so that show just called to me. If you love basketball and a good comedy, that show is a must-watch! And it just recently got picked up for a second season, which means now is the perfect time to catch up.

I also recently binged “Nobody Wants This,” and was instantly hooked. It’s the perfect blend of comedy, romance, and relatability in an easy-to-watch show. I think I watched the whole season in record time. I also rewatched it, possibly two, three, or six times, but who’s counting?

Trying to think of a show I disliked is pretty tough, because if I don’t get hooked early on, I just turn it off. And honestly, sometimes not getting hooked on a show is my own fault and not the show’s because I’m often doing other things while “watching” TV. To be completely transparent, I can’t even think of a show that I watched and disliked. I even did a search on Netflix to see what I’ve watched recently, and nothing stuck a chord.

Afouda Calls ‘Modern Family’ A ‘Cultural Moment’

Finding the perfect show is not just about selecting something to watch; it is an art. You need to know yourself first and put in the effort for proper research before settling for any show. One piece of free advice is to find your rhythm and never let anything deviate you from that path. You could end up like me, binging a terrible show, and become stuck with it, trying to find out the end, so at least the wasted time would be worth something.

If you would take my word for it, then “Modern Family” and “The Rookie” should definitely be your go-to shows if relatable and funny is what you are looking for. However, do not ever, I repeat, never let anyone convince you to watch “The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window.”

Article continues below advertisement

“Modern Family” is not just a show; most fans refer to it as a cultural moment. It was a show that, in my opinion, reminded audiences that family comes in all shapes and sizes, is very much unpredictable, and doesn’t exactly have to paint a perfect picture for them to show love. It conveys the idea that no matter how unconventional a family may appear, there’s still love. The show is a perfect mix of love, humor, and family bond.

In a world where TV show choices are overflowing with crime and cop dramas, it’s really easy for any new series to get lost in the shuffle. “The Rookie” stood out since its debut in 2018. It’s smarter, filled with humor, and way more heartfelt than the regular cop shows. Seven long seasons later, it continues to deliver stories that have kept fans hooked.

Article continues below advertisement

For “The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window,” there is really nothing much to say about this series except, do not watch it! I doubt the makers of the show knew what exactly the tone was supposed to be. Was it supposed to be a dark comedy? Suspense? Thriller? All? Neither? No one knows. The entire movie could have been condensed into a 90-minute film or a single TikTok video, rather than being split into eight separate episodes. I want my over 3 hours of screen time back.

Fiyin Is A Fan Of ‘The Studio’

The HBO period drama is my first pick and has been one of my favorite shows to watch this year. Although I was three years late to the party, “The Gilded Age” serves up all the tea you will ever need. Despite heavy themes of classism, racism, and misogyny being explored throughout the series, each episode promises laughter while making you thankful you are living in the 21st Century. However, it will also leave us with deep thoughts on how our present world came to be. In addition, the battle between Old Money New York and New Money New York is spicier than any of the Real Housewives franchise.

My favorite character is none other than Christine Baranski’s Agnes Van Rhijn. Never have I seen a hater with so much class and dignity being brought to life on-screen. I’m inspired.

Seth Rogen’s fast-paced satirical comedy series “The Studio” left me rolling my eyes — the good kind — throughout its ten episodes. His decision to take the lead role as a studio executive was nothing short of brilliant, as it was the perfect blend of stupidity and intensity. However, Rogen wasn’t the shining star of the Apple TV series.

Instead, it was the exquisite array of guest stars that featured in each episode. From Zoë Kravitz to Ice Cube, Charlize Theron, Anthony Mackie, and the legendary Martin Scorsese, it seemed no one was out of bounds to partake in this deeply chaotic project. It’s like nothing ever made. I didn’t expect less from Apple TV.

Just like the title, Lena Dunham’s “Too Much” on Netflix was a lot — and not the good kind. After Dunham rocked my world with “Girls,” I was really looking forward to her latest creation. However, it fell short.

Nothing has ever been as cliché as the Netflix comedy series. From the poor dialogue to the lack of chemistry between the love interests, everything felt off. None of the jokes managed to land, and the pace was flat. The worst part of it all was the mechanical sex scenes. You could feel the lack of pleasure through the screen.

Although I wasn’t able to go past the second episode, if you seriously lower your expectations, you might be able to make it through to the tenth.

Glory-Anna Still Adores ‘The Big Bang Theory’s Quirky Comedy

Where do I even start? “The Big Bang Theory” is forever a gem because it manages to weave serious science into laughs without ever feeling forced. I often find myself wanting to meet the writers of the show, because they nailed it! I thoroughly enjoy the funny one-liners, clever references, facial expressions, satire, and quirky storylines that keep me coming back, even after rewatching countless times. It’s the perfect pick-me-up on a rough day when I just need to unwind and sink into the couch. The show centers around four socially awkward, yet brilliant, scientists who are hilariously terrible at love, but somehow each finds their match while still climbing the career ladder.

Article continues below advertisement

P.S. The visuals are a bit dated, but you barely notice because the humor and storytelling grab all your attention.

Article continues below advertisement

If you’re looking for a show that sneaks up on you with more depth than expected, I recommend “The Rookie.” Right off the bat, the very first season concludes with an unexpected event that sets the tone of the show as “not just another cop sitcom,” with laughs sprinkled throughout. It seamlessly blends humor, serious police realities, romance, and an engaging, sometimes tear-jerking storyline. I even learned a thing or two about the U.S. police force while laughing along. The premise is different: a rookie cop, Nolan, joins the force after surviving a bank robbery and navigating a divorce. He gets endlessly teased for starting “late,” but quickly proves he’s not just a rookie, but a damn good cop who finds the sweetest love again. Alongside Nolan, you get a peek into the lives of his colleagues and their partners. Plus, don’t miss the show’s total heartthrob, and my favorite eye candy, Officer Tim Bradford.

Article continues below advertisement

P.S. It’s not a romantic show… but it’s full of romance. It’s also based on a real-life older rookie cop.

The show I couldn’t get into… “Breaking Bad.” I know, I know, it’s a fan favorite with high praise on every rating platform, but I just couldn’t get past the first couple of episodes. It drags on and on, and the popular advice to “stick through the first four episodes” just felt like torture. Usually, I can tell if I’ll like a show after the first episode, and this was a miss for me. I tried, I really did… but nope, not my cup of tea. Sorry guys.

Favour Is Still A Fan Of ‘Orange Is The New Black’

Working on this little project has made me realize just how long it’s been since I actually watched a TV show, as all of my options go way back. I could also benefit from this, as I desperately need to update my watchlist.

So, with that being said, my number one show of all time remains “Orange is the New Black.” This is a series I did not expect to get hooked on when I decided to watch the first episode. It’s a dark comedy-drama TV series loosely based on the Piper Kerman memoir, “Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison.” It starts with the main character, Piper’s life swiftly spiraling after being sentenced to 15 months in a women’s prison for a crime she committed 10 years prior (helping her ex-girlfriend smuggle drugs).

Article continues below advertisement

While the series began with Piper as the focal point, the true beauty of “Orange Is the New Black” is seen in how the show shines a light on the lives of the other female inmates. You get immersed in the stories of characters like, Red, a motherly Russian inmate with beautiful red hair, who is in charge of the kitchen; Suzanne Warren, aka Crazy Eyes, (her name alone says it all); the religious fanatic, Tiffany Doggett; the drug addict, Nicky Nichols, and even Piper’s girlfriend who landed her in prison, Alex Vause, along with many other incredible characters. The show perfectly weaves the tales of these individuals into one incredibly funny and, at the same time, heartbreaking TV series.

OITNB, as it’s fondly called, is one of the most successful and critically acclaimed TV series from Netflix. What, with all its multiple Emmy awards? It’s also popularly credited as the series that made the streaming giant the binge-watching force of nature it has become today. So, whenever anyone asks me for recommendations, “Orange Is The New Black” is always my number one pick.

Article continues below advertisement

The next series I would recommend is “Black Mirror.” Listen, this show is what I’ll call almost perfect (and sometimes perfect, depending on the episode). It’s an anthology TV series with dystopian themes that tends to portray the bleakness of human nature in the most absurd, gritty, chaotic, and sometimes comedic ways, usually through the use of some form of technology. With “Black Mirror,” you are getting something new and batsh-t crazy EVERY episode.

Article continues below advertisement

The show manages to put you on a rollercoaster of emotions and very deep thinking, from the first episode of season one, “National Anthem,” that throws you into a tense moment in which a politician is faced with the hard decision of sleeping with a pig on national TV, in exchange for the freedom of a kidnapped fictional British royal, to the third and last episode of the first series, “The Entire History Of You,” which, simply put, highlights why it’s good that we can’t replay our memories, as it may drive a person insane from over analyzing the actions of those around them and reading meanings into everything, (even though, in this episode, the guy’s paranoia may have been justified).

Article continues below advertisement

Other standout episodes from the anthology series, such as “Nosedive,” “USS Callister,” “San Junipero,” “Hang the DJ,” and “Black Museum,” are sure to keep you coming back for more “Black Mirror.” It’s just that good!!

Article continues below advertisement

Finally, a show I would not recommend watching. This one is a hard one for me, as I have enjoyed almost every show I have stuck with till the end. So, while I don’t necessarily dislike this show, I would have to say, “Heroes.” It started strong, showcasing regular individuals who were already dealing with life’s challenges, all of a sudden discovering that they have special abilities, such as flight, healing, mind-reading, teleportation, and telekinesis. “Heroes” season one focused on these ordinary people banding together to prevent a disastrous future from coming to fruition.

Article continues below advertisement

However, the show faced a severe decline, especially in the later seasons, due to the storyline becoming overly convoluted and messy. While I loved this show, I would not recommend it (unless you are willing to watch just the first and, possibly, second seasons). Other dishonorable mentions include “Lost” and the reboot of “Charmed” (just watch the original; I highly recommend it).

Kristin Is Still Looking For Other People To Watch ‘The Leftovers’ …Or ‘Bojack Horseman’

He just shot a dog! They just stoned that old lady to death! If you haven’t watched “The Leftovers,” it may seem like I’m encouraging you to stay far, far away from the bleak premise of this show, where 140 million people suddenly vanish without a trace. The show isn’t about solving the mystery of finding out where those people went. It’s about those who are still here and how they find ways – both healthy and not – to carry on despite their loss. For a show that can be utterly heart-wrenching and depressing at times, the brief moments of humanity somehow serve as a reminder that you could be gone at any moment, so you might as well live now, while you still have the chance to.

Article continues below advertisement

“I don’t understand how people… live. It’s amazing to me that people wake up every morning and say: ‘Yeah, another day, let’s do it.” The animated show “Bojack Horseman” may seem like a comedy on the surface, but our titular horse, voiced by Will Arnett, tackles issues of mental illness, sobriety, and, most of all, self-loathing. Bojack occasionally decides to hold himself personally responsible for his bad choices before he relapses into more self-destructive behavior, emphasizing the complex relationship that we all have with trauma and non-linear growth.

Article continues below advertisement

Although I am a big fan of the book series, I cannot in good conscience recommend “Bridgerton.” The Netflix series was an instant hit during the COVID-19 pandemic, but then, it seems to have gone the way of “Tiger King” after the show’s second season. Although the fourth season is due next year and there are still a few more Bridgerton children to be married off, the show’s format seems to have gone stale. It might have been more interesting to see familiar faces from the first few seasons return to show some character growth after getting married, but at least so far, there have only been a few cameo appearances that only serve to remind audiences of a time when they actually liked the show.
