Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy remains a monumental achievement in cinema, celebrated as one of the most beloved fantasy series and a masterful adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s literature. Expanding upon that hallowed foundation has proven to be a controversial endeavor, with both The Hobbit prequel trilogy and Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power failing to capture the same critical and cultural adoration. Despite the challenges, Warner Bros. Pictures is determined to return to Middle-earth with a new film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. The project, set during the events of The Fellowship of the Ring, is poised to feature key characters from the original saga, sparking widespread discussion about which actors might reprise their iconic roles, including Orlando Bloom’s Legolas.

“I have not heard a peep, actually,” Bloom said about the project during an appearance on The Today Show. “I don’t know. I know it’s focusing on Gollum, so anything’s possible. It’s such an amazing part. I’m so grateful to have been a part of those movies. But I haven’t heard.” Bloom also revealed he’s quite protective of the role. “Listen, I’d hate to see anyone else play Legolas, you know what I mean?, he added. “What are they going to do? Are they going to put somebody else in as Legolas?”

Bloom’s deep connection to Legolas is understandable given the role’s impact on his career and the franchise’s historic success. The original trilogy culminated in an unprecedented Academy Awards sweep for The Return of the King, which won all 11 Oscars for which it was nominated, including Best Picture. Bloom later returned to Middle-earth for The Hobbit trilogy, bridging the gap between the two series. While Legolas is not officially confirmed to appear in The Hunt for Gollum, the story’s timeline leaves the door open for his involvement, making the question of Bloom’s return a significant point of interest for fans.

While Bloom’s status in The Hunt for Gollum remains a mystery, the involvement of other key figures from the original trilogy is becoming clearer. The creative team behind the new film is a reunion of the architects of the original saga, with Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens all returning as producers. Walsh and Boyens are also co-writing the screenplay, ensuring the new story maintains the tone and integrity of its predecessors. At the helm is Andy Serkis, who will not only direct the film but also reprise his groundbreaking performance as Gollum, the character at the heart of the new narrative.

The plot of The Hunt for Gollum will delve into a period largely unseen in the original films, chronicling the search for Gollum after he leaves the Misty Mountains. This part of the timeline is detailed in J.R.R. Tolkien’s appendices, which describe Gandalf suspecting that Gollum knows the location of the One Ring. In the source material, the wizard enlists Aragorn to track the creature across Middle-earth before Sauron’s forces can find him.

While The Hunt for Gollum is expected to draw heavily from these events, the specific involvement of Aragorn in the movie adaptation has not been confirmed. However, other familiar faces are set to appear. Sir Ian McKellen has indicated that he will once again portray Gandalf, and he also revealed that Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) will be part of the story, though the context for his appearance remains unknown. The potential inclusion of Aragorn has fueled speculation that Viggo Mortensen could also return, but no official announcement has been made.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled to be released in theaters in 2026.
