A tragedy has shaken Queens, New York, after an elderly couple was killed on Monday when a man reportedly asked to charge his phone before forcing his way into their home. Frank Olton, 76, and Maureen Olton, 77, were discovered dead inside their residence around 3:30 p.m. The suspect, 45-year-old Jamel McGriff, is now on the run, and police have launched a citywide manhunt.
Details of the Queens Tragedy
The horrific scene unfolded when the Oltons’ son, a New York FDNY EMT, received an alert about a fire at his parents’ house. He rushed to the property and dialed 911 after discovering the blaze. Investigators later confirmed the fire was intentionally set to cover up the crime. Both Frank and Maureen were found dead inside.
According to the Associated Press, surveillance footage showed McGriff walking near the couple’s home just 20 minutes after their bodies were discovered. He had allegedly gained entry to the house after asking to charge his phone. Unlike another neighbor who refused him entry earlier, the Oltons allowed McGriff inside through their backyard.
Suspect on the Run: Who is Jamel McGriff?
Police have identified 42-year-old Jamel McGriff as the prime suspect. McGriff has a criminal record that includes robbery and failing to register as a sex offender. He had just been released on parole after serving 16 years in prison for a 2006 robbery.
On Tuesday, just a day after the murders, McGriff was caught on camera pawning two cellphones in the Bronx. Authorities believe these could be linked to the victims. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the crime as a “horrific double homicide, robbery, and arson,” underscoring the violent and calculated nature of the attack.
Police are urging the public to stay alert and report any sightings of McGriff as the manhunt intensifies.
How the Attack Happened
McGriff reportedly went door-to-door in the Belrose neighborhood on Monday, asking strangers if he could come inside to charge his phone. One resident refused, but the Oltons welcomed him into their home. That act of kindness tragically led to their deaths.
Authorities believe McGriff attacked the couple soon after entering through the rear door, committing robbery and then setting the house on fire to destroy evidence. This deliberate sequence of crimes has shocked the community, with many neighbors now fearful of strangers approaching their homes.
