Jujutsu Kaisen has returned to Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine with a brand new sequel series continuing from the end of the original story, and the creator has opened about what they want to do differently with starting a new serialization. Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo has officially kicked off a new era of Gege Akutami’s franchise as it takes place years after the events of the original. Introducing a new generation of Jujutsu Sorcerers dealing with surprise new threats, this new sequel has been setting the stage for a likely even bigger set of reveals about the franchise to come next.

Jujutsu Kaisen series creator Gege Akutami recently opened up about returning for the new sequel (as spotted by @Go_Jover on X) and was asked about what he was glad he had done when creating a serialized work. Instead, Akutami expressed regret over things he had wished he had done, but hopes to change with the new sequel series. This time he’s hoping to get readers interested more in the characters now that he’s going to be around for a short term serialization and be better prepared for its future.

“There’s only things I wish I had done,” Akutami began. “Even though it’s my second serialization and a short-term (modulo), there has been problems constantly popping out as the story developed that I couldn’t solve with the material I had prepared.” This falls in line with some complaints fans had about Jujutsu Kaisen’s run (complaints that are even being addressed in the sequel), and even more so as it was working its way through to its final arc. But Akutami has a much wider perspective on the whole thing now that he’s completed a story within Shonen Jump.

“Writing a serialization, first chapter, and a one-shot each use different ‘muscles,’ but the awareness of ‘getting readers interested in the characters’ is something they all share,” Akutami continued. “So, when you’re trying to adapt elements from a serialization into a short story, it might be a good idea to focus your efforts on that particular point.” So it seems like Akutami is hoping to have a more concrete plan in place for the sequel to better manage these different elements he had troubles with in the original story when it first hit.

What’s Going on With Jujutsu Kaisen’s Sequel?

Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo is only a few chapters into its run with Shonen Jump thus far, and Akutami is planning to only run the series for about six months and three volumes worth of chapters. The sequel has already expanded the franchise in some big ways as it not only introduced Yuta Okkotsu’s grandchildren, but also revealed that there are aliens that have Jujutsu powers as well. It’s a big idea to continue through for the rest of the story, and an intriguing hook for what’s next.

Jujutsu Kaisen‘s biggest issue was its lack of planning when it came to its week to week updates, and if Akutami has this in mind then the sequel is already starting on the right foot. It’s just a matter of figuring out whether or not this is going to be good in the long term as the sequel ends its own run in the coming months. What do you think?
