The One Chicago Podcast is officially the number 1 podcast in film and tv, rightfully so. This week’s guest was Allen Macdonald – the showrunner for Chicago Med.
This was such an interesting episode; it is very cool to hear from someone who isn’t an actor. It’s not every day you get to see how a showrunner works and how they got into their role. I am someone who has loved medical dramas since I was young, and it was awesome to see that Allen Macdonald was the same. St. Elsewhere is such a classic tv show and so is ER.
Allen MacDonald tells an incredibly harrowing story about a 14-year-old boy he witnessed die on the table after being shot accidentally. It is so clear that Allen cares so much about how good Chicago Med is and how true to life it really is.
I really love the fact that Allen likes writing for Lennox. It is rare to see a well portrayed autistic character on screen let alone someone who enjoys creating storylines for them. The representation fills me with such joy.
Allen appears to be a very straight forward showrunner; he is exactly like the audience. He wants to be able to feel all the emotions through the screen. I truly believe that is why we get such good episodes for Med. It was so intriguing to learn that the writers room spend one week before the start of the season talking about each character and where they plan to take them during the season.
I can’t wait to see what Allen means by the theme of the season being running out of time. Like he says it can mean so many things to so many different characters.
