It’s been 20 years since Bun B released his debut solo album, “Trill,” and the Southern rap icon is still making moves that honor his legacy and his city. In an exclusive interview with The Blast, Bun B opened up about the inspiration behind “Trill Unplugged,” a one-night-only live show held at House of Blues Houston on October 18, presented by the award-winning whisky brand Crown Royal. “I felt like doing the typical concert would not do this accomplishment justice,” Bun explained. “This was a very special moment in creation, my first actual solo album under somewhat dire circumstances with Pimp C’s incarceration and trying to keep his name alive and keep the group going.” As he told The Blast, the celebration wasn’t about nostalgia. It was about honoring the journey, the culture, and the people who made “Trill” timeless.

For Bun, “Trill Unplugged” wasn’t just about performing the hits, but it was about storytelling. “I wanted to do something a lot more intimate,” he said. “That’s why we chose the House of Blues as the venue. It allowed me to bring in a live band and tell some stories about what it took to create this album.”

Bun B has partnered with Crown Royal for several years, from major events like the Houston Rodeo to this latest milestone performance. For him, the partnership has always felt genuine, rooted in trust, respect, and a shared mission to celebrate community.

“Typically, when I’ve been available to do these types of things, Crown Royal has always been the first to stand up,” he told The Blast. “They understand what it means to be one-on-one with the community, to not put walls up and to allow people an entry point into what you’re doing.”

The rapper said what makes Crown Royal such an authentic fit for him is their mutual intentionality. “They support, but they’re not all on top of you,” he said with a laugh. “They know exactly how I plan to communicate with the people, they understand it, respect it, and give me space to do that. Having Crown involved allows me to focus purely on the performance and making it special for the fans.”

For Bun B, every collaboration with Crown Royal is about shining a light on Houston’s culture, which has always been at the center of his artistry.

“Because I know that I have that level of backing, it allows me the freedom to really explore the performance,” he said. “When Crown’s affiliated with what we’re presenting, those are the few things I don’t have to worry about. I can just concentrate on my performance, my collaboration with the band, the presentation, all of that gives me a little bit of freedom.”

He added that the relationship goes far beyond branding, because it’s about community connection. “They’re about reaching out and connecting with people in real time,” Bun said. “At this point, people almost expect that when there’s something special coming from Bun B in Houston, Crown’s probably going to be a part of it.”

Even as he celebrates “Trill” ‘s milestone, Bun B remains focused on using his platform to uplift others. His partnership with Crown Royal, he says, helps him expand his ability to give back to Houston’s next generation, not just artists, but anyone striving for something greater.

“I always want to be available to the next generation of people, not just musicians,” he said. “Some people are educators, some are physicians. We want to encourage people, push them in the right direction, and give them the support they need.”

He added that having Crown Royal behind him helps him do that. “It gives me more freedom and time to focus on what people might need from me, the mentorship, the advice, the connection. That’s all I want, a stronger, more solid bond with the people.”

After “Trill Unplugged,” Bun B has no plans to slow down. His partnership with Crown Royal continues to thrive, with more collaborations already on the horizon, including their annual presence at the Houston Rodeo, where his Trill Burgers brand has become a fan-favorite activation.

“We have 9,000 square feet to activate at the rodeo, so we’re definitely going to have collaborations on that side,” he teased. “We’re going on our fifth year of collaboration now, and everything we’ve wanted to present has come off exactly as we planned, thanks to the support of a great company in Crown.”

And as for what keeps him returning to this partnership year after year? Bun B says it’s simple. “As an entertainer, if I’m doing something to get closer to the city, to make those ties even tighter, I’m definitely going to call Crown to support that. And I know they’ll be down for it.”

Bun B Says Staying ‘Trill’ Means Staying True To His Roots And His Community

From his legendary debut album to his ongoing community impact, Bun B’s legacy continues to evolve — and with Crown Royal by his side, the Houston icon proves that “keeping it Trill” means staying true to your roots while lifting up those around you.

“We bring people together,” Bun said proudly. “We represent the community and the culture, that’s the unity we all build in the room, in real time.”
