A new Star Wars rumor is stirring up talk and this time it’s about Daisy Ridley’s long-awaited return as Rey Skywalker. The upcoming Star Wars: New Jedi Order film, which was set to continue Rey’s story after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, is reportedly being put on hold.
According to industry insider MyTimeToShineHello, Lucasfilm has temporarily paused development on the project while awaiting approval of the latest version of the script.
The scooper shared the update, saying: “The Rey movie is on hold until Lucasfilm approve the new script.”
That report lines up with recent chatter about the studio’s shifting priorities. The movie, directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and written by George Nolfi, has already gone through several creative revisions. Nolfi’s latest draft now appears to be the deciding factor on when production can move forward.
Earlier this year, insider Daniel Richtman suggested Lucasfilm was focusing its attention on other Star Wars projects for the time being, including Shawn Levy’s Starfighter and James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi.
Richtman noted that the Rey-led film hadn’t been canceled, just “temporarily on hold” while the studio re-evaluates its upcoming theatrical slate.
Despite the delay, Ridley seems optimistic about the creative process. In an interview from February 2025, she said the extra time would help ensure the story lives up to expectations: “I don’t think any fans would want it to be rushed. The wait will be worth it.”
Lucasfilm has obviously had a rough time trying to crack the story for this project. It’ll be interesting to see if it actually gets the greenlight or finds itself in the trash compactor with all the other cancelled Star Wars projects that came before.
