The healing process is finally starting to begin in tonight’s new episode of Fire Country. A few are handling it better than others, but one thing I believe to be true is that they’re going to get through this only if they start to trust one another.
Jake holds on to the fact that he heard that Brett Richards has been asking around for firehouse openings just in case he has to dismiss members of Station 42. I mean it’s great that he’s sharing this with Bode now, but he’s been holding on to it for about a week. That doesn’t sound like a long time, but according to Brett’s timeline he’s giving Station 42 two weeks to get their act together. As he’s saying this, Bode notices that Jake has Vince’s axe. This sets Bode off and Jake simply says his father left it to him according to the will.
This was tough to hear only because that axe has been in the Leone family for generations and to have it pass Bode must’ve hurt him. So Jake got the axe, Eve got his guitar, what was left for Bode? To make matters worse, it’s Vince’s birthday. As I was watching Bode begin to lose it, I couldn’t help but say to myself Bode, let it go, but I get it now.

Eve has the day off and helps Sharon collect Vince’s things for donations. While they’re sorting through all of Vince’s clothes, Manny stops by and that’s when Sharon gives him Vince’s challenge coin. Now if we’re keeping track here: Eve gets his guitar, Jake gets his axe, and now Manny gets his challenge coin– what does Bode get? From what Jake said, this will was drafted before Bode got back home and got clean which explains why he isn’t getting anything, but seriously?
Back at the station, Bode is going through securing knots with a few station members when Brett walks in telling him the time he clocked was wrong. He makes Bode do it this time and times him, Bode fails each time. I know Bode knows how to do this, but I didn’t like how he allowed himself to be distracted. I wanted Brett to cut him some slack, but Bode needs to get his head in the game right now.

Eve and Jake drop off some of Vince’s things and that’s when Eve reminds Jake that it’s Vince’s birthday. Which he thinks is why Bode was acting the way he was. Another thing Eve tells Jake about is how close Sharon and Renee, Vince’s ex, seem to be now. They don’t think too much of it because it seems like this odd pairing is helping Sharon heal. I don’t know if I trust Renee though – I’ve got my eye on that one.
While on a call, Bode and Jake are tasked to help this man, Gage, who was stuck on a zip line. A picnic blanket got stuck on the line basically trapping him – it was part of a surprise he was trying to set up to propose to his girlfriend. Once he’s saved, he accidentally sets off fireworks. Now imagine fireworks combined with the dry season in California; the fireworks started a fire. It was quickly put out, but Bode loses it on Gage. Brett sees this and tells him to listen to his captain (Jake was telling him to calm down) or he’d be suspended. Honestly, we all know Bode is going through it, but this crash out was valid and was so Vince coded. I couldn’t be upset with it.

Sharon stops by the station and has a talk with Bode. This scene between them had me so emotional for so many reasons. You could just see the weight Bode’s been holding since losing his father got lighter as he told his mother he didn’t stop by to see what his father left him because he wasn’t expecting anything. He’s so hard on himself, and it’s like he didn’t feel like he deserved to be left anything. Sharon tells him that the will was written before he came back, but that she and his father always talked about what he’d give Bode and it was his wedding band. Sharon tells him that Vince loved him all the way to the end. They share this emotional moment and I loved that when Bode started crying Sharon said she was going to cry with him.
Eve put together this dinner for Vince’s birthday where she tries to make one of his dishes. It’s a small intimate gathering sans Bode, but Sharon is giving him the space he needs right now. This last scene with Eve’s song was beautiful. To me this felt like the moment everyone was really starting the healing process. For Bode, this meant doing an intense workout which was troublesome to me, but I’d rather it be that than anything self-destructive.

On their next shift, Brett commends Jake on how he handled Bode’s crash out at the last call. He says that he doesn’t think his presence at Station 42 would be long because he believes Jake would make a great Battalion Chief. This makes Jake happy but that quickly fades when Brett says that Bode is a problem now and doesn’t think it’ll get better. He wonders if Jake would be able to do what needs to be done when that time comes– would he be able to remove Bode from Station 42?
I could talk forever about this episode; it’s one of my favorites of this season so far. I’d like to hear from you. Share your thoughts below or connect with me on X/Twitter @chenfordhugs
