Quarterback Dak Prescott is a three-time Pro Bowler who has been leading the Dallas Cowboys’ offense for a decade.
Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green is not impressed.
“Dak’s a bum,” Green, 35, said on the Tuesday, November 4 episode of his “Why Is Draymond Green Talking About Football” podcast. “He’s getting some numbers and they stink. Dak’s a bum. You will never win with Dak.”
The Cowboys are just 3-5-1 on the season after losing 27-17 to the Arizona Cardinals on Monday Night Football the night before Green unleashed his take to podcast cohost Jordan Schultz.
“I have won four championships, Jordan,” he continued. “You gotta understand, when I say bum, I’m not saying Dak Prescott isn’t a good NFL quarterback. Of course he is a good NFL quarterback. When it is all on the line for all the marbles … He’s a bum.”
Prescott, 32, has had plenty of regular season successes as a Cowboy, but is just 2-5 in playoff games over his 10-year career. His playoff losses, compounded by some costly turnovers in big moments, have contributed to the narrative that Prescott chokes under pressure.
Green, for his part, is a four-time NBA Champion, winning all of his rings alongside Stephen Curry with the Warriors.
Prescott has not shied away from the criticism, and offered some of his own after the Cowboys’ latest loss, saying the Cardinals “kicked our ass on both sides of the ball.”
“It’s very frustrating,” he told the media after the game, “knowing that you’re better than that, and going out there, not putting on a performance that’s close to your standard, or even the expectations, or what you thought you could do and expected to do.”
Prescott completed 24 of 39 passes in that game with one touchdown and one interception. He was also sacked five times.
ESPN analyst and former Cowboys defensive lineman Marcus Spears fired back at Green on Wednesday’s episode of First Take.
“Draymond made the point about being a four-time champion and winning championships, and when it’s on the line, Dak doesn’t show up,” said Spears, 42. “You can attest that to Dak Prescott. You can put that in his wheelhouse. You’ve done it many times. It’s just the respect of calling a dude a ‘bum,’ that has played football at the level in which he has played. If you’re just attributing it to the playoffs, being a ‘bum’ is kind of crazy to say.”
“And it’s a bit rich coming from Draymond Green, who’s played with arguably a top-5 player to ever be in the NBA, to come out and say that like he’s been the catalyst,” Spears continued. “He’s been very important. He’s been a big part of what they’ve done championship-wise, [I’m] not taking that away from him. But Dak Prescott would be the Steph Curry to the team in the way it’s supposed to go. It’s just that football is completely different when it comes to trying to win a championship, and it’s not always attributed to the quarterback’s performance.”
